Was up in Northern Wisconsin with the daughter this past weekend , cruising down a fire lane , my buddy was leading . Saw a lot of blue on the snow .... looked ahead and the antifreeze was pouring out the bottom of the sled .
Popped the panels off and saw antifreeze on both sides , daughter said see heard a pop and knew something was wrong and shut the sled off . Very good on her part and she kept saying sorry dad . I kept telling her don’t worry ..... Took belt off and engine turns but not with starter - guessing because of no antifreeze , the system won’t let turn over ?
~~~~ So any ideas on the issue , I haven’t got the top off to peek around under the air box and around the sled .
-Pretty sure it isn’t the cooler in front of the track leaking from a rock or stud
- the pop sounds like maybe a hose jumped off ??
There are a few places where a line could "pop" off. There are two lines going to the top of the head. Main hose under the motor. Hose beside the oil tank. Overheated and popped the rad cap off???
Maybe post a few pics with the panels off.
You need to top off the coolant and see if you can find the source, my guess is heat exchanger, pop would be stud or rock/ice chunk putting a hole in it. No hoses could ever pop off. That or like steiner said cap sealed shut and it blew it off. Also unlikely. If its that's much coolant it has to be a large hole. Not sure why it won't turn over though. I didn't think there was anything electronic to prevent that EXCEPT oil pressure. Oil level is good right?
My wifes 13 Apex broke one of the mounting tabs off the coolant tubes that goes into the top of the cylinder head.
Will be working all day and bartend tonite , so won’t find time till tomorrow night
It definitely shouldn’t have overheated , we had just started out from the cabin , just went across Lake Nelson and had just ran 1/2 mile on the fire lane at the end of the lake when it happened .
I thought would see if there was something that usually happens - because I don’t remember hearing much like this happening .
We should all know more by Wednesday morning !
I had to replace the front heat exchanger on my 18 Apex and when removing it (yes, I was able to without pulling the motor) I noticed a wear spot on the front side of the heat exchanger (facing the motor) that I think could be problematic for others who own the late model Apex's (i.e. 11-18 vs 06-10). There is a hose that is located between the rear of the motor and the front side of the heat exchanger on the clutch side that is braided on the newer Apex's. You can see this hose when looking between the primary and secondary clutches and looking at the area between the backside of the motor and the heat exchanger. Not sure if mine was an isolated incident where the hose was too close to the exchanger or if all of them are like that. I checked the same hose on my 08 Apex and the hose on it is actually larger in diameter and is not braided; hence why I thought this was only applicable to the later model years. This braided hose was rubbing up against the top corner of the heat exchanger and actually wore a pretty decent groove in it. I only had 6000 miles on my 18 Apex when I found mine. Can only image how much worse it could be on others with more time and miles. I ended up placing a larger diameter hose over the braided hose to keep it from wearing into my new heat exchanger; just didn't have one in the size I needed that was black. Not saying that is what happened here but if something like that were to have happened to the front heat exchanger, you would not see any damage from the back side like you would if a stud or rock pierced the exchanger. Additionally, something like this or a similar issue (i.e. one of the hose connections on front side of heat exchanger popping off) would also explain why there was coolant on both sides after removing both side panels.
Found it !
~~. The starter blew up and the endcap probably sliced the hose open it runs between engine engine block and starter
Tried to upload a photo photo but it’s too large .
~~~~~. So why did the starter blow up ?

Wow, no kidding. Usually when the starter fails, it does not disengage from the engine and locks up where it can eventually lead to damage to the starter gear and clutch but maybe you got lucky, sort of, where it exploded instead and only took out a coolant hose? :dunno:

The starter has a special one- way bearing in it. Have seen a few of them lock up and not turn. No idea why it would to it when riding.

I was thinking I would get “ oh your ____ is bad and caused that “
Great !
Now I’m just special ,

Ha , she’s 15 and probably had a death grip on bars wondering what the day would be like ..... she did 149 miles the day before .
Hauck Powersports said what you all said ~~ no way they don’t do that !!
Travis at BOP said the same and wanted to see the picture .
