Hey. I just bought a 2017 sidewinder mtx. It has a bunch of stuff done to it and im looking for information on how to figure out all that was done to it before i change anything so i dont screw it up by changing something. Specs as sold to me.
2017 sidewinder mtx 162
Ice age rails with anti stab kit
Ca pro skis
270hp tune
Ns1 gauge system
Tapp aftermarket clutch
Thats all i know from the listing and once i got the sled ive found that it has new fox float 3 evol shocks all the way around, the intercooler guard was swapped with one out of a arctic cat, lightweight battery.
My big questions are how do i figure out who made the tune and if i need to get it reflashed to remove the stock exhaust and put on a mbrp race exhaust or speedwerx straight pipe?
Is there anything specific besides the driveshaft bearing, shift forks for reverse, rov, oil tank gasket, and tunnel savers, that i should look at and fix over the summer?
What is stock gearing for the 2017 sidewinder so i can order a updated top gear in the chaincase thats correct?
I havent been able to ride because theres not even enough snow to see on the ground. So ive got plenty of time to do needed updates so i dont get left on the mountain. Thanks for your help and ideas.

Most tunes have the vendors name show up on the dash when you power the sled up.

That is what google said but the issue is the aftermarket gauge replaced the stock dash entirely. Its a 10 inch display similar to a new polaris or skidoo with the built in maps and changeable gauges but everything runs separate from the sled.
Its just a android tablet in a special case that plugs in to the changed dash to get the info from the sled. I can upload pictures later showing how it changes everything but it doesnt display any information about the sled like the stock gauge would on startup.

Usually when a tune is referred to as 270 its Hurricane. You could call Hurricane and with your serial number they should be able to tell you if its their tune.

Ill give them a call and see if they can tell me. I guess if nothing else i can just call the major tune makers like that to see if its any of theirs. Its pretty much turbo dynamics, hurricane and i cant remember the other one for the big 3.

Ive scrolled through the master list of recommended fixs and known issues for the sled. Is there anything in particular that would be good to look at thats not included on the master list? Ive got the upgraded top gear, oil tank gasket, reverse shift fork upgrade, tunnel braces, driveshaft bearing upgrade, and the tunnel saver plate ordered and on the way already. I am planning to go into the chaincase and either weld or loctite and peen the tensioner bolts.

I would have opened up the chain case before ordering a bunch of that. I would bet its already got it if its has a Tapp clutch on it. Secondary helix looks billet too.
21/49 is the stock gearing, you can run a bit taller depending on the riding you are doing,
I probably wouldn't fart around with the clutching and tune very much, it would appear previous owner has probably spent a good deal of time and effort getting it to where it is unless he stated otherwise when you bought it.

I wasnt planning on changing the tune unless i had to because it has the stock muffler and i was hoping to swap that out to shed some weight along with putting a different seat on it. I figured out its a turbo dynamics 275 tune and they said if i swapped the muffler i would have to have it reflashed.
I ordered the parts in case it didnt have them and if it does awesome. I can box them on the shelf for next year. I know it doesnt have the oil tank gasket though as i can see its still rtv.
The guy i bought it from was not the guy that did all the mods he bought it with them and said it rode great he just was looking for a sled for his wife to ride because he bought a new 850 skidoo that he liked more than the yamaha. He said the only issue he had ever had with the sled was the battery dying because of the display constantly charging.
Im just looking at bulletproofing the sled and making it a little lighter because alot of the riding i do is mountain exploration mainly because ive never been able to really go explore in the mountains with my buddies.

I took apart my oil tank when it started leaking and used a higher quality RTV gasket maker and sealed it up, used way more than what was on there from factory, haven't had an issue since.
If you're going to have it re-flashed id probably go with the hurricane 270 hi-elevation flash, I wasnt overly happy with my TD tune, they also got the # of teeth on the driver's wrong so my speed was reading around 15% high.
Im running the Hurricane hi elevation 270 tune now, and like it alot more. Hurricanes 240 flash pulled pretty much the same as TD's 270 flash with the same clutching. Turned it up to 270 on the dash and smashed into the rev limiter. Hurricane also uses 3bar map and TD does not.
CRacing makes a nice light weight muffler, and not very far way from you. Muffler and lightweight battery are easy ways the shed weight. After that it gets pricey.

I will keep that in mind. I was thinking about getting the closed loop tuning from TD so it would read the sensors and change what it needed to keep things happy and safe. I will look into the hurricane tune. I havent had much experience with aftermarket tunes so its nice to hear real world experiences from people with real time on sleds.
All my previous history was stock 1000 triples or mpi turbo and fuel controller on my nytro.

There is a metric chit ton of knowledge on this site, more so in the trail section for the sidewinders though, TD and Huricane both make good tunes for the trail riding side, which i would say is 90% of the sidewinder market..I will keep that in mind. After getting a TD tune and needing some refinements with it and speaking with them on the phone a few times I came to the conclusion they are not as experienced when it comes to the mountain segment.
Hurricane tested their high elevation tune at 10,000ft + for awhile to get it to run right before selling it.
I too am contemplating the closed loop, but its a decent chunk of change for potentially not a lot of improvement, some fellas like it, some dont. Seem like anything above 270-275 one needs to be paying attention to the AFR.
From what I've read they run rich until about -18-20°C
Id probably still ride it first and if it rips and the rpms are where they should be id leave the tune alone and just concentrate on a few of the drive line things and gas and oil change every season and giver.

I get that ive been looking through both sidewinder forums to learn more about the sled. The tough part for me is i hate quiet sleds. Despise them to the point ive considered the precision efi side exit exhaust. That another issue ive encountered that you mentioned above. Most of the market is tailored towards the trail side of things.
The only reason im looking at the tunes because alot of people have said if you swap from the stock exhaust to a mountain can or straight pipe the sleds lean out and run into detonation and damage to the sled.

I believe you are correct with the stock muffler tunes vs the performance muffler or straight pipe tune. I think there is a bit discount for an upgraded/updated tune but that might only apply if you are the original owner... That would definitely be a question for TD
I know on a stock tune you could run cold air intake and muffler and not have any issues, I ran my sled that way for probably 2500 miles. Some days I think it ran better that way lol, not quite the pull up top though.
This is the can I run, they do make one that is conplete straight pipe, it is quite loud, this one here is just nice... but everyone near buy can tell when you're on it.

2017-19 Yamaha Sidewinder Resonator Pipe
2017-19 Yamaha Sidewinder Resonator Pipe This 2 1/2" Resonator pipe saves 11 lbs(weighs 4.5 LBs) and gains up to 20 hp over stock without any fuel controller needed. We have tested the turboed pipe at all rpm ranges and have only seen 12.1-12.3 max on the air/fuel gauge. The pipe is fully...

Im tempted on the pure straight pipe one. Ill talk to TD and see if they will do a deal with me for a reflash for the muffler.
