800xp vs ApexGT on the lake

The XP no doubt is a cool sled. I have several friends who have them. My brothers 08 XP 800 Adrenaline just went down after about 4000 miles. He has had several issues with the sled, but it never left him stranded until it went down. Another bud had an 08 XP X and hated the ride, so sold it and bought a 09. Much better ride and he has it tuned just great. There are 2 other Apexs in our group and they are not even close to Marks XP. That said, he takes the time to make sure his sleds are always working perfectly. I rode it the other night and had a great time on it, and have to say it just ripped for an 800. His is several lenghts better than my brothers. All in setup, but serioulsy equal states tune, equal traction the XP is hard to beat up to 100. The thing that bothers me about the XP is it seems to be on the edge from the factory and there are several guys out there with more than 2500 miles that are having catostrophic engine failures. It will be interesting to see what comes from Ski Doo with regards to longevity. My Polaris buds have stayed put on red because of there good luck over the years. They dont run like the Doos, but I do think Polaris is building a nice quality 2 stroke. Also interesting is Cat, Suzuki has done a nice job over the past few years getting nice power and making a seemingly more durable product.

With all that, no way, no how any 2 stroke out there will outlive any of what Yamaha has to offer, but if you still like 2 strokes, there are some good options out there.

Matt, I totally agree with you .... DOO makes those sleds on the edge. You can't mod them at all, without blowing them up... Cat, makes an awesome motor. You can mod the crap out of them and they seem to respond well and not blow up and have pretty good longetivity/reliability to them. Just the rest of the sled is junk.

The DOO will run once setup, but DOO's 800 twin never ever had long legs for top end performance. My 800 REV never broke 108mph on radar and that was modded up pretty good, including head and port job.. I believe it's mostly the way the new TRA's are designed to grab the belt. They grab hard out of the hole, but can't shift into the OD..

Freak i disagree,my bud had the 04 rev 8 all stock,i mean completely, and i always carry gps, when i had my rx1 i could only beat him on a lake after a mile and only by 1-2 mph,we gpsed his at 114 at 2000 ft elv. in jackman on bigwood lake, and even on snow his went 105 gps his was a weapon to say the least, and malcom who is taking in my doo on trade has a couple of new xps running 120 radar on mooshead lake, his website even shows a couple running 124 and a machz doing 129 on the gun,BUT he changed out the jackshaft and installed the old style button secondary on the xps to get them to run. These new xps will run if you can keep the ecm from turning back timming as soon as the motor gets up to temp, and a number of other erritating clutching woes, tower braces,TRA7 POS primarys made now by TEAM,ya you heard that right, junk,i have never had to work so hard for so little in clutching in over 30 years of messing w/sleds to get this pos to run,and its best gps speed was 113 once on bare ice, first pull,on snow best 108 gps, generally runs 103-106 on snow all gps speeds, but inconsitant to say the least, and carrie spare belts, and we rag about hand warmers,ya mine stopped working first ride last year, all good now but mine had its share of small problems, never left me in the woods though, but thats why i am getting rid of it before it does, this new 10% alcohol fuel we now havesounds like crap in the doo, idles bad, runs crappy, runs hot, dont trust it.

Pete, my speeds were on good hardpacked snow. I don't ever really get a chance to run on good ice. The best condition I can get is a plowed road. Still not the sa,e as ice. We get to much snow where I live to get a chance to run ice. Our lakes are slush most of the time from the amount of snow on them...

Sledfreak, what differences have you seen on your topend with the Cobra track? Better or worse? I am hearing conflicting reports on top end with this track.

More traction usually means less ultimate top end, without more power. The original 03 finger track was a fast track up top..putting a ripsaw on my other 03 black rx1 let it kill the blue 03 in acceleration, but it would lose on top end unless in something other than real hard pack or ice.

The stock Pol 800s seem to hit a wall at about 100. On a firelane with just a dusting of snow I raced my buddie's 800 Switch. Both studded, he pulled me up to about 100 by about 5 lengths but then I caught up to him and left him far behind. This was with my '07 Vector. He was very unhappy. Don't know if it is a gearing or clutching limitation but the stockers are slow. Next year I will still be going back to an Apex. Once you have the big horse it is hard to go back.
