I have been trying to educate myself as much as I can on the subject, but I still have a few hang-ups….
For the record, my Turbo kit is an MC kit for my 03 RX-1…..
Reading all the turbo talk has left me bug eyed….I have been searching for the things listed below and finally I have just decided to make a post and ask for you expertise:
Here goes:
1. If I run the kit at the 10 lbs boost, do I really need to have an O2 or knock sensor?
2. If I can’t always find premium fuel, will I harm my motor with regular?
3. Who makes an octane boost that works, do I really need it?
4. What’s up with the intake cam setting is it supposed to be changed or what, the manual is not clear on it at all?
5. And ignition timing, should it be adjusted ahead or back?
6. My kit came with 3 Yamaha head gaskets, is that what goes in? The manual only refers to 1 head gasket.
7. Should I be replacing the head bolts when the head gasket(s) are changed?
8. My kit came with a new oil filter (called high flow)…Is the Yamaha filter not ok to use, or do I have to get more like the one that came with my turbo?
9. What oil with the turbo? And what viscosity? I have been using Amsoil since 3000 miles. I now have 8800 …
10. With only the perforated metal screen under the turbo, will the turbo not be getting pelted with snow and water?
That is…for now anyways….So I am not a mechanic…and I will be having a reputable dealer do the engine work….I just really want some heads up….The old girl has been completely reliable, and I’d like to keep it that way.
Respond here, Pm, or my e-mail (below)...thanks guys

Here goes:
1. If I run the kit at the 10 lbs boost, do I really need to have an O2 or knock sensor? YES ON THE O2 OTHERWISE YOU HAVE NO IDEA IF YOU ARE JETTING LEAN OR RICH...LEAN KILLS MOTORS. DONT PROBABLY NEED THE NOCK SENSOR.
2. If I can’t always find premium fuel, will I harm my motor with regular? YOU ARE TAKING A BIG RISK WITH REGULAR...TURN IT DOWN TO MINIMUM BOOST IF YOUR GONNA DO IT, BUT JUST DON'T DO IT.
3. Who makes an octane boost that works, do I really need it? NO, PREMIUM WILL BE FINE AT 10LBS...IF YOU'RE WORRIED MIX IN A LITTLE AV GAS (AVAILABLE AT MOST SMALL AIRPORTS)
4. What’s up with the intake cam setting is it supposed to be changed or what, the manual is not clear on it at all? ONLY IF YOU GO WITH A GASKET PLUS SHIM OR 3 GASKETS...THAT LOWERS YOUR COMPRESSION BY RAISING THE HEAD WHICH CAUSE THE CHAIN TO BE ROTATED TOWARD THE EXHAUST STROKE. STICK WITH 1 OR 2 GASKETS FOR 10 LBS AND DON'T DO THE INTAKE CAM.
5. And ignition timing, should it be adjusted ahead or back? THATS REALLY WHAT THE CAM CHANGES DO
6. My kit came with 3 Yamaha head gaskets, is that what goes in? The manual only refers to 1 head gasket. I USED 3 SO HAVE SOME, OTHERS HAVE USED 2...IF I WERE TO DO IT AGIN I WOULD LEAVE STOCK AND LEAVE THE CAM ALONE AND NOT RUN OVER 10LBS.
7. Should I be replacing the head bolts when the head gasket(s) are changed? REALLY ONLY NECCESSARY IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE RUNNING HIGHER BOOST
8. My kit came with a new oil filter (called high flow)…Is the Yamaha filter not ok to use, or do I have to get more like the one that came with my turbo? DON'T KNOW, MINE IS A YAMAHA
9. What oil with the turbo? And what viscosity? I have been using Amsoil since 3000 miles. I now have 8800 …I RUN MOBIL 1 SYNTHETIC IN ALL MY VEHICLES AND RUN 5-30 FOR WINTER RUNNING.
10. With only the perforated metal screen under the turbo, will the turbo not be getting pelted with snow and water? DON'T HAVE A REAR MOUNT LIKE YOU DO BUT IF THAT'S HOW IT IS DESIGNED, JUST PUT IT IN HOW THEY SAY TO.
That is…for now anyways….So I am not a mechanic…and I will be having a reputable dealer do the engine work….I just really want some heads up….The old girl has been completely reliable, and I’d like to keep it that way. EXACTLY WHY YOU MIGHT CONSIDER LEAVING THE SINGLE GASKET AND NOT ADJUSTING CAM IF YOU ARE GOING TO RUN 10LBS.
GOOD LUCK!!

Re: A bunch of questions about my (not yet installed) new tu
Hi John,
Congrats on the new purchase - you're going to love your kit.
To your questions:
1. No, you don't necessarily need a knock sensor. An O2 sensor is required if you're going to run an air/fuel guage (it is the sending unit).
2. Possibly, yes. If good fuel availability is going to be an issue, I'd suggest setting your wastegate up for a lower boost setting, and install a boost controller to take it back up to ~10lbs when you are running premium.
3. There is no such thing as an octane boost that works.
4. Yes, with .081" of head gastket (stock .027 x 3) you should adjust the intake cam timing. I can walk you through it if the manual is hard to understand.
5. Is MC suggesting you retard the ignition timing?
6. See #4
7. Stock head bolts (I'm guessing you mean the studs?) are fine.
8. Use the high-flow filter.
9. Amsoil is fine. Consider running a synthetic if you aren't already.
10. Haven't heard anyone complain about the mesh screen. There is a ton of heat under the shield...
If you'd like to swing by one night we have an 03 RX stripped down to the tunnel and the motor is apart on the bench. I can walk you through pretty much anything you want to ask about on a rear mount turbo.

Hey guys….Thanks for the responses to my list of questions…
You have cleared up a few things for me….But I still need more…
OK…so I will get an air/fuel gauge…..Would ones like the Auto Meter Lunar Series 4175 or 4378 be a good choice?
I think I may run into times when I can’t get premium fuel…..What’s this boost controller? Will this enable me to turn it up and down dependent on my fuel? Can you make some recommendations!
Mc is not suggesting that the timing be retarded……It was just I thought I had……See….I’m no engine mechanic..
About the HIFLO Filter…..When I compare it to the Yamaha one…It is smaller (in height)…..It just does not look as good a quality either…are you sure that that’s the one to use!!!
Annnnd another thing…..I need a track mine is a 121….I am considering either the 9833….ripsaw or the 9900 R which is 14 wide X 1.5 lugs……..Which do you think will work best….
Lakercr ….I live in Thompson…way north of you (smiling)…..Do you run a performance shop in Winnipeg? If so how do I find you…I will be in Winnipeg in November.
Again thanks gents for taking the time to answer……

I'll check on the guages and let you know. We've had good success with the Autometer guages (phantom Series).
Yes, that is exactly what a boost controller will do. You can buy a commercial one, or we can make a very simple (but effective) one for you.
Depending on the thickness of the oil adapter ring, they might be shipping the high-flo to solve a clearence problem betwwen the filter and steering arm. If the Yamaha filter fits, there is no reason not to use it.
Ripsaw is an awesome track. That's what we run.
PM me a # I can reach you at. We built kits, various kit accessories, installation and engine work for the turbo sleds. HLMRX1 and Turk are two forum members from Manitoba that have had their sleds through our shop.
One of our kits from last spring...:
