A possible cam chain tensioner failure

Finished replacing the tensioner today. It took 4-5 hrs total but if I had to do it again I'm sure I could cut an hour or so off from that. I made a tool out of a 13mm socket and removed the rear engine spacer which makes it a little easier to get at the tensioner. I took it for a short ride and rechecked it for any abnormal engine noise. The noise I heard prior to the tensioner replacement is now gone so it definitely was a bad tensioner. I'm glad I caught it before it caused significant damage.

oh, you got it done. that's good. After work today i put mine mostly back together. Enough to run it long enough to change the oil out. I will go out tomorrow and put the seat on and button everything else up. Mine definitely did not go back together as fast as it came apart. I am probably pretty close to your 5 hours on mine.

Got the call from my dealer today. Yamaha will not cover my 05 vector tensioner. They said only 07 sleds with bad tensioners will be covered. I really didn't think they would cover it but they could at least discount the part. Instead Yamaha increased the list price to $152.

Whats this, YAMAHA increases the price for Cam Chain Tensioner 8ES-12210-01-00.
It's bad enough they won't warranty the 2005-2006 Rs Models, now YAMAHA increases the price of the replacement part. This is UNACCEPTABLE!

Does anyone know how to get ahold of the District Yamaha Rep. in Ontario...I would like to talk to him about thie Chain Tensioner issue !!!!!I don't want to involve my dealer untill I talk to him...

kyzer, the reps name is Scott something. Contact Chris Reid from the Yamaha Blog. Tell him your story and ask the reps name. But from what I remember he is a dick....

Well talked to Yamaha Canada..They said dealers have recieved a notice that if they were working on a sled and it was sounded like it had a bad tensioner then deal with it.. My point being that my sled has no recalls and has been running fine then there is no reason to take my sled to the dealers... So where does that leave me and others that have not had any issues but are concerned about the tensioner..My dealer acts like they have never heard of tensioner problems but Yamaha Canada says that all the dealers have recieved a notice about it...Yamaha Canada has to get there #*$&@ together !! and take care of there customers... If it was something that didn't involve the motor I would fix it my self but I won't mess the motor...Oh well i wil sit back and figure out what my next move is going to be...

I wish I would have known about this before I got done with my Stator Coil Replacement. I had it apart to replace a bad coil on my 05 RS/ER would have been easy to deal with then. Don't feel like doing that tear down again this season, but maybe afterwards prior to storage I will do it. I'll still ask my dealer about it to see what he knows but the stator wasn't covered out of warranty so doubt highly this would be any different.

"They said only 07 sleds with bad tensioners will be covered"
did the dealer say this was for every 07' vector that yahama is going to replace?

The way I took it is if you have a 07 with a "noisy" tensioner they will replace it at no cost to you. A dealer needs to determine if the tensioner is failing then Yamaha authorizes it. The dealer I took it to had never heard one failing so they had no idea what to listen for. When I took it to them I brought my scope and made sure they heard it. They are now listening to all sleds that come to their shop and are making customers aware of the problem.

Yamaha covered both my 06's. If it is a good reputable dealer Yamaha will cover on the dealers word that tensioner is noisey.
Go to a different dealer, if they are any good they will get it done on warrenty.
I talk nice about reliability , etc. and dealer said leave it with me. He called back and said tensioners are ordered, but said he wanted to wait untill motorcycle season was over. I said fine and called in fall and he said bring them down. Doubt they even listened to them.

We took out the tensioner on one of our rages, ther was a noise like the cam may have rolled and something clicked. Are we in trouble and do we have to take the valve cover off to retime the engine, haven't put the new tensioner back in yet. Thought it was just a swap to new tensioner,I guess not? Need advice on how to proceed .Thank You for any advice. plowking

You need to put the engine on TDC before you remove the tensioner. If you think the timing jumped pull the rocker cover and lower timing plug and realign the marks. When you rotate the engine always rotate it in the forward direction, never reverse. After I installed the tensioner I rolled the engine by hand several times to make sure nothing was hitting. The tensioner may make a clicking noise as it adjusts but should stop after a couple rotations. Make sure you remove the tab and install the tensioner plug before turning the engine.

If you have any doubt about the timing check it before you reassemble the engine.

x2.

pull the valve cover. This engine will skip time by itself when you pull the tensioner. Especially if not tdc on #3.
