clutch
remove the three small washers off the back side of the secondary clutch. This will allow the belt to climb higher in the secondary.

You need to add washers to those three bolts to raise the belt (move the sheaves closer together). Removing washers will loosen the belt because it allows the bolts to thread in further and push the sheaves further apart. Yes you will need to remove the clutch and there is three bolts on the backside of the secondary which will require an 8mm wrench to remove.
I went into my dealer to ask the same question about my 09 xtx. His answer was "buy a new belt" there is no adjustment on the sheaves. I could not believe what he said. I said, "I think it has something to do with (3) washers for adjustment?" he said "I don't think so". At that point I turned around and walked out. Could not believe it! I laugh every time. And there are actually more stories I have from this same dealer.

I am going to assume the only advantage of this would be to compensate for a worn belt on the secondary side... However would you not still lose a small bit of performance (even after doing this washer trick) cause the primary clutch will not push the worn belt as high as a new one? That's my best guess, I'm sure someone can confirm!

does having the belt an 1/8 above the secondary sheath a good thing? like is there any benefit to do this?

Having the belt at an 1/8" above the sheaves helps. It will allow the sled to start out in the lowest ratio. It is kind of like starting your car out in first gear. The farther down in the secondary you start the belt the higher the gearing which would be like starting out in second gear. Hope this helps. You will also retain the best performance by having your belt at the 1/8" above the secondary sheaves.

I run my belt as high on the secondary as I can with out the belt squeeling at idle. I have changed the shims without removing the clutch but it is a challenge not drop the shim or bolt. Best to remove it.

So basically its lower end tourqe but does it take away from the top end.

It would give lower end torque yes, but I think it would really only be useful when your pulling away very very slowly, or reversing.
And I don't think t should affect top speed, you are only removing the shims and not relocating them, so the secondary should still be able to open just as wide as stock, allowing the belt to go the lowest. Maybe not tho, i haven't done this.

If you want a little more top end you can install a 1.5 mm washer on each mounting bolt, under the helix.
