Just put on new pads, cables, etc. When the wheels are off and I turn the drums by hand it takes little brake to stop them quick, firm. I have adjusted until I hear the shoes rubbing against the drums, then of course I let off tension until the turn freely. Once I put the wheels on and go for a rip, very little brakes. I will stop the bike but not very quickly, more of a rolling stop. What am I doing wrong????Diceman

you have them backed off too far. check the resistance with the tire on or a bar. you want it adjusted so that you feel the resistcne with the tire on. dont back them off at ll when you feel the resistance as the shoes will wear into the drum some as you use them. this should improve your braking.
i tend to set mine on "kill" so i know they will work after the shoes wear in.
