Advice??? Lost RPM's

Sled runs the same with or without the K&N's on it. I'll look at the boots closer. Stock airbox is not on it. Have been running the K&N's since new and it's always run like a raped ape. Still looking for someones opinion on the secondary spring???

did you try it wrapped tighter on the secondary?

the secondary spring might be getting weak. try it at 1 and 4 and see what you get. it might be upshifting too fast to hold the rpms.

Maim:

So 1 & 3 where it was set was at 40 right? Now 1 & 4 would be going to 50?
I'll try it...

For the few bucks I was just going to get a new spring from Simmons. There has to be close to 5K on this one...

I'd be more apt to think it's a fuel problem. I'd check for crap in the carbs..especially if you're getting gas in the middle of nowhere. Don't forget the little screens behind the needles....

Hey DoktorC,

I lust printed all the info out on the carbs in the service manual and I'm heading out to pull the rack. I don't see anything that says screen or filter on the exploded diagram of the carbs.

Where is this filter.

The sled went from bad to worse. It's running like crap when I stab it...but smooth as silk at Idle. I think I have a clog!

Thanks!

Once you have the bowls off you will see the float (attached by a pin to the carb). Attached to the float is the needle. Remove both...carefully....don't break the stand that holds the float pin. Once those are out of the way you will see the "seat" (the brass thing that the needle sits in). Remove the phillips screw that is holding the seat in and pull the seat out. On the bottom of the seats are small screens...

Now, if it's getting worse it's probably stuff in the jets but you should be cleaning (or removing) those screens anyways.

Thanks! I'm just starting to tear it down now. I appreciate your taking the time to post back!

yup. a lot faster than waiting on the new spring to come in and chep to try as well.

BINGO!

As suspected once it started running really bad...there was something in one of the main jets.
It almost looked like a little shaving of a clear plastic of some sort. I have no clue how that could have gotten in there but I blew thru each jet gently into my hand I saw it come out.
I then blew all the jets out with the compressor. I did find those screens you mentioned and they looked ok. A little build up but I took care of those too.
You saying you can run without those?
Are those what filters all the fuel or is there an actual fuel filter in the system somewhere?

Took it for a spin since it's snowing pretty good here and it rips like she used too. What a great feeling! :jump:

Guess I did not need those springs afterall but I think I'll just toss them in as long as they are coming. Clutches need to be cleaned up anyhow.

Thanks again guys!

;)! ;)! ;)!
:yam:

That's good to hear!! I found a piece of silicon in the pilot jet of my outboard this summer and have no idea where it came from...magic lol.

I run without the screens now...I don't know if it's better or worse. There is a filter in the tank....

Hey thanks again DoktorC...
So that filter in the tank can't be replaced or is it even necessary?

It is replacable...but I've never taken the time to do it on any of my sleds.

There are two actually...one on each pickup lol.

Reason I ask is when I drained out the premium fuel the other night it almost looked like there was a bunch of crap in the bottom of the tank. Just in case I have future problems I was wondering where those filters are. Any clue on how to get to them if they are in the tank in case I ever need to?

Thanks

Looks like they would have to come out the filler neck. They're much larger then the pickup holes and likely larger then the sender hole. I've never done it so I can only guess that there is enough line on the pickup to reach...otherwise you'd have to pull out the metal "pass through" and unhook the line there then fish out the line and filter. That part would be easy...putting it all back together might be tougher lol. I'll fix me when it's broke lol.

yeah...sounds like I will be leaving this alone unless I really have to do it.

#$%&* that!
