hey guys

i got a 2003 rx1 mountain and i want to get a aftermarket lightweight exhaust system for it. whick would you prefer? i like the yoshimura exhaust and the single pipe exhaust. which would you prefer besides this? also where i can get them? also any sound clips of them?

thanks

We've had a ton of posts on the subject. I've had both an Excell and a Whiteknuckle on my RX-1. Both rattle your head and cost a fair bit. We have settled on a cheap, undertunnel, system that is working flawlessly on 8 of our sleds so far, mine with over 7K miles on it. It has many advantages in addition to the price. If you decide to buy something, I'll take the "y" pipe off your stock exhaust for a fair price.

I did a similar set-up to Kachess - used the factory headers and parts of the exhaust. Works excellent. I have a stock Apex exhaust if anyone is interested. Derek

Make one. It'll cost you like 50 bucks if you don't want anything fancy like ceramic coating.

any help with making one because i am new to four stroke! please post what you have that you got made homemade.

thanks

Here's a pic of the one I made. It's was a 2" cherry bomb. Don't put the turn down on as it'll hit your track.

With a single pipe mounted like the picture directly above this post, what do you think the maximum diameter of an under tunnel single pipe can be without the track hitting the pipe?

I currently have a 2 1/2" paddle track with the 3" diameter Kachess under tunnel single pipe on my sled with no track rubbing issues.

BUT.......... I'd love to hear the sound of a superbike coming from my sled and the diameter of most R-1 pipes is more like 4 3/4". So, going to a R-1 pipe would extend the pipe down and closer the track by about another 1 3/4".

Do you think it would fit without creating a track clearance problem?

I also am very interested in getting that "streetbike" sound from my sled... if anyone has found an R-1 exhaust that fits well, please share!! I have a glasspack under my sled now and it has broken down the packing to where it is gettin a bit obnoxious!

This is the way I did my exhaust. It's a R1 GYT-R carbon fiber muffler that weighs 4 pounds. It's got a great sound that's not too loud after going through the turbo, Ken.

I don't have a picture - but I used an Allis Chalmers replacement muffler from the local tractor supply store. It is aluminized, weighs less than 5 pounds and is only 18" long. The inlet is 1.75" - perfect for my Vector.

I have $33 into the muffler and clamps.

That's what I'm talking about!

I guess I didn't know mine was so loud and obnoxious until my buddy bought Aaron's old sled with the same Kachess pipe. His sounds better and about half as loud as mine. I guess his packing hasn't blown out yet?

It looks to me that if I were to mount a RX-1 pipe it would have to be mounted a bit further back in the tunnel (under the tunnel extension) so there would be clearance between the muffler and the track like Givemeaboost did.

Now, if there were only a small diameter (3") pipe that sounded good and gave that super bike sound that could be just swapped with my blown out glasspack I'd be very happy. Allis Chalmers pipe? I sure wish I knew how that sounded but, you have to know I'm not looking for the Polaris fourstroke sound. :tg: SnowmadTT, do you have a Allis Chalmers part number? For that price I may just give it a try.

Also, I see there's a Yoshimira R-1 pipe with a few scratches I can get pretty darn cheap. That's the sound I want but I really don't want to completely redesign my entire exhaust system.

Awesome ;)!

Sometimes I am ashamed of my back-woods ideas (tractor muffler, pool noodle seat, pet-proof window screen mesh hood) but they save me money and make my sled one of a kind!

I think the part number of my muffler was AC33 - they are built by the Stanley Muffler Company. They are offered in many configurations and sizes - the smaller ones like mine are 3.25" diameter (round) and you can get almost any inlet and outlet size you need. I used an AC 2 last year but it was too long to accept a downturn exhaust tip, so I went with the shorty this year.

Here is one I found on eBay...
