I run alot of MX down here in the south and clean the bikes filter quite often. After I wash the foam filter with gas I let it dry then spray the foam real good with some PJ1 filter oil that becomes real tacky pretty quick.
Now I know that my snowmobiles never really get to see the dusty conditions that the bikes come incontact with but I just had to clean the filters on the Apex and RS Venture today because I was bored. I really didn't expect to remove to much dirt and dust from the sleds filter but when I washed it in gas in a white plastic bucket that gas sure became dirty quick. I let the filters dry and sprayed them with some of the PJ1 filter oil and reinstalled them in the sleds.
Myself being from the south I really don't know if the procedure I use on the MX bikes can be used on the snowmobiles with the extremely low temps that the sleds run in. Do you think that the filter will be fine?

I'm thinking the filter will be fine however; the lube might cause problems when cold. If the sled seems to be running rough when that filter oil gets cold, you might want to re-wash with gas and then install a powder pre-filter if your worried about the belt dust (I'm assuming this would be the reason for the black gas after the wash).

Powder pre-filters are socks designed to fit over the standard pod filter (K&M, Uni, etc.) See the attachment below for a look at the pre-filter for my Mountain Performance Super Charger.
Also here is a link to the pre-filters designed by K&N to fit their different types of filter pods. http://www.knfilters.com/wraps.htm And here's another link to their snowmobile filters along with their respective pre-filters. http://www.knfilters.com/snowmobile.htm
