Another do it yourself turbo project

Hey Fever, the gasket is from a blank sheet used for making header gaskets. For the restrictor, I used a .045 welding tip from my MIG. Fits perfect! Going to try and call you this aft. - got a quick question on aluminum tubing...

Finished up some small details on the turbo project today. Made a wiring harness to power the fuel pump (whenever it finally clears customs) as well as the guages I'm installing. Last year we ran an Autometer temp guage in the bottom left corner of the cluster. Now with the turbo, boost and A/F guages are being added as well. The new pod will lay over the existing cluster and have room for 3 (2 1/16) guages. It's hard to describe how I'm doing it, but I'll take a few pics when it is complete. Based on how it looks already with the template, this thing is going to look factory.

Finished up the mods to the carb vents neccessary to run boost. Also checked the float screens (spotless), and replaced the POS phillips screws for the float bowls with Allen bolts. Built the intercooler and plenum, but didn't like how the final volume worked out (too big), so going to twist up another one Tuesday. I need one day in the shop with all the parts and the sled should be ready for testing.

Still waiting on my fuel pump and FPR. Apparently the parts shipped on Monday, so I should have them by the week-end. In the meantime, started on another intercooler/plenum design. Also did a little more work on the new guage pod. Should be test piloting this week-end for sure.

Dude...what do you do for a living? That looks great! Snow Fever did you do the same thing? Great Work guys....! Something to be said for Canadian Ingenuity EH?  Very Impressive!

Hey that's funny because so am I :D I am in Software actually and run my own business. BUT...there is no freakin way I could do what you are doing. Keep up on the posts...very interested how it runs?

Yeah, me too...

Assuming that the parts arrive by the week-end, I should be testing Sunday. I'll update the thread Sunday nite.

Yea, us Canuck's got nothing better to do while sit'n in our igloo's in the summer. Hey Lakercr not sure why your making such a cool looking dash, If last weekend is any indication on mine you can't spend much time looking at it. (Well maybe in a field or on the lake) Can't wait to see it done. Hey pulled my plugs last nite and they were just looking like a hint of tan on them. I had 130s with the needles droped one but I'm going to raise the needles one and throw in some 132.5s. I'm also going to put another gram or so on each weight. I got a line on a place in California that say they build Titanium springs for sled clutches so I'm going to see if they can re-produce this one I have (Gold/Yellow/Gold) but with a higher rate. This one is 1.5 if they could make a 2.5 or 3 the RPM Gods will be happy. I let you know what they say in case you need a custom spring.

Fever - you've got an igloo?? We just sleep outside with the dogs here...

Yeah, let me know about the springs. I'm hoping that last years clutching will be useless once I start force-feeding the motor.

The new pod is getting the carbon fiber treatment on Saturday. I'll post some pics - if you want the template let me know.

I'm going to start withthe 135's on jetting. Probably going to be a little fat, but that's a lot better than the alternative.

You have a package on your way...

Actually all the testing I did last year I found this beast to like a little more fuel on the jetting then less. I ran No lower then 132.5 in the mountains but mostly rain 135 it did pull harder with more fuel. I was just trying the jetting down thing on a scoope I got but because my set up is a little off the wall I guess it doesn't translate? I'll keep plugging at it slowly, we always say it takes till Christmass to truly dial in a new sled and DAMN is this NEW!!!!!!!!!!!! Love it

IT IS ALIVE!!

I lost internet access for the past week, but I'm back in the game now. The turbo has made it's first runs on the snow, and Holy SH!T, is this thing different! Only running about 5lbs boost right now, but rpm is straight to 11 grand, and the track ratchets like crazy. This is going to be a quick post, because we're heading out right away to do more testing. Just wanted to let those who have been following along that we're up and running. I'll post more detail tonight.

The intercooler in the pictures above didn't work out. It went into the box of broken dreams with the others. Version 3 (the one we ran yesterday) so far seems good. Excellent throttle response, and float pressure is working right.

Ran the turbo for about 2 hours last night. First impression is that the motor is smooth, almost like a turbine. Rolling the power on slowly, I was seeing boost by about 5000rpm, and could take it up to about 10 without much trouble. Will have to adjust my wastegate a little more. We had a ZR 900, XC7, and our XC440 snow crosser out for some testing as well. The cat just had reeds and the heads done, and was working really well. I didn't run heads-up with it yet, but from back to back testing my impression was that the RX would easily drive away from the cat. Once the turbo has more time on it and a few of the bugs are worked out, I'll post some race results...

I have one small oil leak to fix, and the IC needs a quick tweak, otherwise things are looking pretty good!
