Another First Ride Report

'08 Nytro FX & '07 Leftover Phazer first Ride in CT

I got out for the first time this year with my 12 year old daughter and her new Phazer. We rode 30+ miles on 1.5' of powder covered with 5" of sleet, in freezing rain. It was a very strange surface to ride on, but the sleds were great!

We broke the trails through, and ran through some deep powder in some fields, but here is the MPG on 0 mile engines.

Phazer 12.99MPG
FX Nytro RTX 12.6MPG

I'm not at all concerned with the figures, given the conditions and speeds we rode. We topped out around 15-25MPH on the small trails, and maybe 35-40 in the open fields. We know the Phazer does better, so the Nytro isn't to much worse. + I did allot more 3/4 runs, then waited for her to catch up.

Conclusion so far?

I love both sleds! I rode an '05 RX1 Warrior long track the last 2 years. I loved the power, and could take the trails faster then my REV buddies, but the maneuverability stunk. It hated backing up (dug holes) And the REV's turned sharp at low speeds, while I ended up having the heaviest sled stuck in the drainage ditches. I always got it out, but it was a drag.

The RTX is SO much more capable on tight trails. I like the REV like riding position (I'll admit it) and it feels so much lighter the the RX1. I'll also admit the RX1 was very stable and substantial feeling at top speeds across a lake. I haven't had a chance to test that yet, but suspect I will give up some comfort there... No big deal.

The hand warmers are adequate, but don't burn your hands like the RX1. The thumb warmer is potent. No wet boot issue, but I'm not picky. The power is incredible. I'm sill taking it easy as I break it in. I did a running full throttle blip, dug to the ground & started into a wheely. The Phazer is a pretty fun ride as well, especially in tight trail conditions. I think I'm going to enjoy the short track....

The FX Nytro feels right. I don't care the new REV's are lighter. Here are a few comments:

1) I will be switching the stock ski's (USI X2 Triple Threats?) Probably just go with Woody's dualis on the Phazer.
2) I will be adding a med height windshield w/wings.
3) Would it kill Yamaha to make a heated shield connector standard on a $10k sled?

I can now benefit the REV like handling, without blowing up my Rotax. Two Ski-Doo friends of mine replaced/rebult engines on sleds with less then 1500 miles on them... from Can't wait to get out on the the VT & NY trails!

Go Yamaha!
