Another oil question

So get this, our local dealer no longer stocks 0W30 for our sleds...the only place in town now that sells 0W30 is Walmart of all places (actually one other place but its hit and miss). Walmart has Super Tech (I'm assuming a house brand) and Castrol I believe.

Manual says to not use "Energy Conserving II" or higher, or a higher grade than CD

Both of these are listed as CF and just "Energy Conserving"

What are people running in their sleds? I questioned the salesman and he said no one was buying Yamalube so he stopped bringing it in, and the above oils should work fine.

One other store has 0W20 on sale (never heard of 0W20 before), but would this damage the Phazer?

The Yamalube 0w-40 is the fully synthetic. The Yamalube 0w-30 is the semi-synthetic. I use the 0w-30.

You sure about that? I've never heard of a Honda (or any car for that matter) taking 0w-20 fromt he factory. The 4 Honda cars that I have owned have taken 5w-30 like most other cars. Our Ford work vans take 5w-20, though.

Back to the energy conserving question, what are the concerns with using it? The dealer says its OK, but I would like to hear what the guru's say.

I use the Amsoil 0-40 in all my toys.Zinc and Phosphorus content is why.They were removed from many newer oils because they will ruin catalytic convertors and sensors.If you research the subject they also protect cams.Oils with a SJ rating in them normally have alot of these.Now first two oil changes I ran Yamalube with no issues at all.I think if everything is right in your motor there is probably no reason to need the extra protection the Zinc and Phosphorus in oil provides.However if say your camshaft isnt quite up to spec as far as hardness or for some reason oil is slow to get up to topend it is just a little insurance.Can I prove it?No.But Cannondales had some really bad cams and I never had a issue while many did.I always ran the Amsoil.

service manuel of phazer ,nytro and apex say to use 0w30

can affect something to use yamalube 0w40 full?

It is worth the price? if I run it's hard

I run Mobil 1 0W40 full synthetic available at Canadian Tire and Parts Source. Checked and it has a bit higher Zinc content than their 0W30. It is not Energy Conserving so it's all good.

What you have to remember is that the numbering is:

0 = the viscosity cold (0F)
W = winter rated
40 = the viscosity when hot (210F)

So basically, by running 0W40 instead of the recommended 0W30, the oil is a little thicker when it's hot, which provides a little more protection but may affect HP at high RPM. Cold weather starting is not affected.

Energy Conserving will affect the starter clutch. In simple terms, don't use oil that states energy conserving. 0w30 is standard rate, but being the temps are going up 5w30 would be fine.
