Last year I replaced on original belt at about 2200 miles and used it as a spare. The second belt only lasted about 300 miles then the top blew off it. When it blew, I was wide-open in heavy wet snow on a warm day, which I figured contributed to it. Today with the original belt back on, it blew the same way about 200 miles since the last one blew, only I was running easy on a cold day on hard packed road. I wonder if I have a clutch problem or just bad luck.

Nope; it,s the clutching. I owned 2 nytro,s. Stock clutching will slip the belt down low & under rev on top in deep snow(but overrev on hardpack). Bad combo. Stock nytro clutching in deep snow needs help. Works semi-ok on hardpack but not so good in deep snow. Look to aftermarket primary weights. Also the 09 xtx clutching is set up way better for deep snow riding.

I was feeling the sled vibrating hard when I tried to go over 40mph in heavy wet deep snow....was that my belt slipping???

Nope;
You had other issues. Belt slip is overrev with hot smokin primary or secondary. I wish i was closer to check it out cus my 08 shortie was flawless in deep snow.

Vibration is usually driveline. Reasons are
Bad belt
Bad driveline bearing
Track way off centre
missing bogey wheels(s)
I did have a bad secondary clutch with a nick in it 1 time that vibrated badly
bent drive shaft(u can hit stuff in snow & not even feel it)

I'm on my 4th belt - 3500 miles of hard aggressive riding.
I'm going to rebuild clutch after this season & probably will look at aftermarket weights & springs.
Primary sheave had a wicked groove down low from early on - due to the hard azz belt.
Keep an eye on the belt's height in the secondary & adjust as needed via the shims on the back. As the belt wears down, adding some shims DOES help.

Get some good aftermarket weights like drag n flies or supertips. No belt slip; big grooves or blown belts when dialed in.

I think you should look at your weights first! You may have notches in the heel of the weight (not normal) which causes the weight to hang up and un-necessary belt slippage. If both your primary and secondary sheaves have grooves then you most definitely have worn weights.

300 miles this weekend on my 09 XTX and BAM, belt blew up, wraped the cords in the secondary and locked the clutch up, took 15 mins and two guys kicking the secondary and one yanking on the cords to get it free. Up intill that point I was having a minor vibration on take off, once the new belt was on it was gone. Not to happy about 300miles on a belt on a 10,000 dollar machine. Lets hope this is a continuing event.

On 5th belt 2400 miles mechani said try staying off throttle when landing 4 stroke torque tears belts up

I clutch all my own sleds. I have not blown a belt in 5 years from anything from a stock nytro to a 300ish hp turbo rx-1.

anyone checking offsets and center to center for problems of being out of spec???
turk knows his stuff, if he says the clutching is causing the slipping and heating issue and causing belt failure prematurely, you can bet that is what is going on.
just be glad our belts arent comming from skidoo.... their belts are 150.00 or more in some cases. ski

Center to center is sorta a non-issue with a nytro and also with the back cross bolt in the engine mount it is real hard to be misalined unless the torque on the front adjusters is out.
I also have takin out 2 belts on the stock Nytro but it was always the top cogging coming off. Once in the mountains and one on a poker derby going wide open throttle for three fields in 2 feet of powder. ( Thats okay isn't it........LOL!). I also just lost a belt the first day with the turbo with Ulmers clutching. I'm thinking due to running the belt too far up in the primary that the outter belting is wanting to exit. Using the clutching that I do I know for a fact it isn't due to belt slippage. It also isn't due to any knicks or edges on the clutches. Mind you these belts are pretty hard so maybe slippage is a possible issue..
