Hi,
I'm new to the forum, and new to sledding. Great site, and I've learned alot already. My question is,
I'm going to look at an 06 Apex this week that needs a new track and according to current owner the drive shaft bearing is rusted prohibiting the track from spinning. I've read that this can happen due to a lack of maintenance. Would this keep track from turning though? And could something else been damaged from this? What else should I look @ when going to look at this sled. Should I be scared away because of this problem? Like I said before I am new to the sleds, but have above average mechanical ability. Thanks in advance

Moneyshot Lincoln the bearing would cause the track to be seized if it was rusted bad, or something happened in the chaincase,

Take a look at the bearing side first it's not that hard to take out than take it from there if you are buying it,

How's the condition of the sled other than the track not being able to turn?

Well, I'm no expert but I don't think that bearing could stop the torque of this motor from turning the track. I would think that the bearing would just break apart and the driveshaft would be slopping around in there. Take a good look under the sled and at the driveshaft. Could be something in the chaincase side as well... They are great sleds but if there is a problem it will have to be fixed and the price should reflect it... Lots of sleds parting out in the classifeds as well if you need to find parts later... good luck...

I would think twice about getting into this one. Being new to sledding, you really don't deserve to get stuck with a basket case needing significant repairs. Could also be a broken drive shaft or chain case problems. Unless the price is extremely good you might want to walk away from this one. There are plenty of good used sleds out there.

Apex

I think i would stay away from this sled. Chances are that if he ran the sled with the bearing in that type of condition there is a great chance of it needed a lot more work/investment. Bearings, exhaust donuts, the clutches could need rebuilding, bearings/wheels in skid. The drive shaft/chain case etc.. Not to scare you but you would be better buying a high-milage unit with regular maintenance.

Good luck though! Take a buddy with or someone who knows sleds to help get some extra advice!

Wow, thanks for the quick replies. He said he will take $3400. 4K miles on it. I guess it can't hurt to take a look at the sled @ that price. Current owner says only problem is bearing and sled has some wear. It just scares me that proper maintenance wasn't being done. Supposedly exhaust donuts were done last year. thanks again, I'll keep you guys posted.

Sounds like a money pit to me. Buy one that's been maintained and hasn't had the crap beat out of it like this one sounds like it has.

well the berring being dead would cause the track to not want to move but if it wont move with the motor its a prob in the chain case. also when berring goes out it takes out the speed sensor as well most times.

I'm sure it's a little disappointing to hear all our negative responses, but its mostly all good advice. If the track is locked up, who knows what else has been damaged. Try to take some one with you that has owned and worked on an apex. They are great sleds, but maintenance is very important and this sled seems to have been neglected. even if the price is low, once you start fixing it up your cost will increase very, very quickly! If you do make an offer, I would make a super, rediculous low offer. Good luck and welcome to the forum!

Let us know where you are from. Without snow, we all would be glad to get a little "sled fix" and go look at it with you if we knew how close you were....
