If your battery sat for a while discharged it could have sulfated the plates.
The optimate charger your Yammie dealer sells could fix that, worth a try.
You can also do an internet search on battery desulfation. Otherwise you might need a new battery.

Charge it with a trickle or float charger. You'll be amazed at how good the charge will last off a float charger.
The alternator won't put out enough to charge...unless of course you want to run it at 3000+ rpm for 12 hours or so.

Check out harbour freight...they have cheap float chargers. No excuse not to have one.

Optimate III best float charger bar none. 2nd choice would be Battery Minder.

I find the CTEK 800 a better charger, but to each his own

you're gonna need one that desulfates the battery. ramps up voltage and cooks the gunk off the plates. wal-mart sells charges that do this and they are reasonable.

How long did you let it charge before putting it back in service?
The battery in my Kawasaki motorcycle got totally discharged once, I tried to charge it for 2 days, 3 days, 4 days with my Optimate III and it still went dry after a few hours of riding. I thought I'll give it a last try and left if on the charger for more than a week, that was the fix to my battery problem, it never went dry on me again.

I have mine plugged into a optimate III. 5,600 miles later no problems. It has gone to the desulfate mode atleast 3 time.
