Every year we hear how the RX1 has gone on a serious weight loss program. In the manual 03 shorty with ER 560 lbs. 04 was supposed to have shaved 5-6 lbs off if I remember correctly. 05 was supposed to be 30 lbs lighter that the 05 & now the 06 Apex 17 lbs lighter than the 05. My math says the machines should now weigh about 510 lbs. On Yamaha Motor site I think the APEX ER weighs 548 (if i remember correctly) Only 12 lbs lighter than the original 03. Can someone tell me with the math or was Yamaha lying to us all.
:o| :o| :o| :o|

Don't get me wrong I really don't care that much about the weight and I am impressed with the new lineup. If I had the cash I would trade my 04 for the APEX. Maybe 07

I beleive they were talking about the mountain sleds. They may be closer in weight now but that extra track better ski's better handling is well worth putting a few of the pounds back on.

At the snow shoot last year Ski Doo's (for example) were there on demo rides all day.
When it came to the "weigh-in", the Demos were put away and a Locked Semi Trailer van was pulled around the corner. The Doo boys proceeded to pull "different" sleds out of the van (Same Models). The difference was these "special" machines were there specifically for the weigh-in.
sound suspicious??

Good point HYERUP. Lots of fudge factors built in to manufacturers claims.
That is one of the reasons I dont get too excited about these discussions. I think the 03 weights were fudged pretty good and now that they are paring them down I think they are being pretty honest.
When somebody like Srxspec or the mags do the weights the truth comes out and I think Yamaha will prove out to be really close while other manufacturers will be caught red handed.
With full tanks the 4 strokes do have a 12 lb advantage BTW :D

The 2003 & 2004 numbers were very generous to say the least. The 2005 RX-1 was within a couple of lbs of what was published (567) which was 30 lbs off of the actual weight of the 2003 (607?), I'm sure the Apex will be right on as well. Yamaha has made it a very strong point to provide truthful weight numbers for the public on the new 4-strokes!

Truthfull numbers. I have the manual 03 shorty 156 with ER. I remeber aon 04 supposed to 56 lbs lighter. My 04 manual stills say 150 w/ER. Now the big advertizing on Yamaha goes on serious weight loss program in 05 a claimed ***30 lbs *** reduction. Even if we ignore the 04 the 05 with it 30 lb reduction would put the sled 530. Now another 17 lbys with APEX ER...I want to pick up my 517 lbs APEX and I want it now. These number were from Yamaha but they don't add up. Anyone ?????

What don't you understand? I already clearly stated the answer above. Back when the Firecat was released it was claimed at 450 lbs, but today in full production it now runs at 475 lbs! The new Yamaha's will weigh what the list shows. I honestly fail to see where Yamaha has said the new Apex ER is 17 lbs lighter than the RX-1 ER?

Some interesting info about the 03 models from all manufacturers.

Here's something from Snowgoer a year or 2 ago, measured dry weights and listed dry weights.

2003 Polaris 500 XCSP-M10 - 492 lbs. Listed by Polaris at 492 lbs.
2003 Polaris 600 XCSP - 492 lbs. Listed by Polaris at 494 lbs.
2003 Polaris 800 XCSP - 506 lbs. Listed by Polaris at 510 lbs.
2003 RMK Vertical Excape – 511 lbs. Listed by Polaris at 488 lbs.

2003 Ski-Doo REV 600 James bond – 508 lbs. listed by Ski-doo at 454 lbs. (missed by 54 lbs!) Tied for the big liar award.
2003 Ski-Doo REV 800 - 480 lbs. Listed by Ski-Doo at 454 lbs.
2003 Ski-Doo MXZ 600 H.O. – 500 lbs. Listed by Ski-Doo at 472 lbs.
2003 Ski-Doo MXZ 800 Adrenaline – 501. Listed by Ski-Doo at 474 lbs.
2003 Ski-Doo 800 Renegade – 512. Listed by Ski-Doo at 489 lbs.

2003 Yamaha RX-1 – 612 lbs. Listed by Yamaha at 558 lbs. (missed by 54 lbs.!) Tied for the big liar award.
2003 Yamaha SXViper – 516 lbs Listed by Yamaha at 489 lbs.
2003 Yamaha SXViper ER – 543 lbs Listed by Yamaha at 518 lbs.

2003 Arctic Cat F5 – 457 lbs. Listed by AC at 447 lbs.
2003 Arctic cat F7 - 473 lbs. Listed by AC at 460 lbs. (Sno pro versions are 10-15 heavier, mostly because of extra frame braces.)
ZR900 – 524 lbs. Listed at 507 lbs.
ZR120 - 162 lbs. listed by AC at 165 lbs. 3 lbs less.
4-Stroke Trail, non turbo – 556. listed by AC at 561 lbs. (5 lbs. less. That is outstanding.) The turbo will weigh more.

The thing to note here is that Mountain Machine weights are lied about the worst. Flatlanders may not be as concerned about weight.
The other thing is that in discussions Yamaha's RX-1 is confused with the RX-1 Mountain.
The 2005 Vector is a good example- the weight was spun pretty hard in the media, and confusion over Mtn versions played into it, leading to a public that thought it was 22 lbs lighter than an RX-1. It is 9 lbs lighter.
