Okay, so I have sold my Rx1 Mtn 2003 162" and now going for a new sled..
I can't decide between 2010 Nytro MTX SE 162" or Apex MTX.
I have only tested one sled, and thats the Apex so I'm pretty unsure about the Nytro and almost everything I know about that one, I have read here or other forums.
Probably best to say that either one, I'm going to turbo it, perhaps only 180hp MCX on the nytro..
It seems that here in Sweden people are talking about pretty serious belt issues, especially when boosted. Belts that blows in less than 10 miles in the deep stuff (seen reports on rods coming out of engine block prior to this, overrev when belt blows)
but instead almost nothing on the Apex.
Is this really a big problem?
Is this just a cooling and clutch setup issue on the nytro, is there a fix or is it just something you have to live with?
Since I did not have a chance to test the nytro in good snow conditions etc, is it much more easily manouvered in the trees etc compared to the Apex? Seems that some ppl thinks the Apex is a Point and shoot racer?
I prefer playing around the trees going upward rather then just shoot up the mountain, even if it happends sometimes..
I'm planning to keep the the sled (nytro or apex) for at least 3 years....Please help me decide?!

Fortunately I can't comment on the rods coming out the side of the motor as it hasn't happened to me. Can't say I have heard of too many failures on the Nytro motor either. Based on your requirements though- especially your desire for something that can shoot through the trees- the Nytro MTX would definitely be the better choice. I haven't run my nytro in the mountains, but I do routinely run in 4+ft of powder with it here in the northern flatlands. I have only blown one belt in 4000mi (happened at about 2000mi) and it didn't over-rev the motor when it happened. Probably my fault because I was pulling a taller lug track without changing gearing for too long. Offtrail the nytro is a much nimbler sled than the Apex. If you are already comfortable on the larger Apex-style chassis, you might be happy... but I think you will like the Nytro much better if you are already used to the 4-stroke weight.

Belt issues and rods coming out of the block are not issues on either sled. Both are proven dead reliable on boost. You just need to run proper fuel and have good clutching.
As for riding characteristics the Nytro is more maneuverable and lighter but also handles more top heavy and feels like it has a higher center of gravity. It's great in the powder but I found it unruly in any kind of set up snow or hard pack.
If you already ride an RX1 you are probably more used to a chassis which is closer to the Apex already. And being on the boost will make it a different animal. I'm a little biased toward the Apex myself just because I've owned both.
Your best bet is to get on a Nytro and try it out. If not you'll be kicking yourself in the a$$ if you buy one without trying the other!
And do a search, there are tons of these threads on the forum.

Thanks for the response.
Im used to the 4 stroke weight alright
I try to run as much off trail as I can, so that sounds neat.
Highter center of gravity, is this a really bad thing? Especially when its not powder?
Is the nytro harder to go sideways with than the apex?
About the testing of the nytro, well I want to buy one now but there is no snow
Problem is that even if I can find one to try out, it will be in the flatlands and probably not much snow at all, so I feel that I cannot test it out properly.
Rods comming through the engine block sounds unusual yes I know, Its always the failures you hear about and not about the engines that works like clockwork.
I have done some searches and read miles of text, still can't decide
A small conclusion should be that a 180hp turbo kit for the nytro will be awesome around the trees?
Im pretty used to the Rx and Apex chassis, but since i ride more in the trees than just shooting up a mountain. I sure would like to have the best sled to ride in that kind of enviroment, but also still be able to shoot up that mountain..
I've read about several people here in Sweden that have bought the nytros but then went back to the Apex because they think the Apex is easier and more predictable. That got me thinking.
Im not sure which year it was on the nytros, only that all the sleds were boosted.

I had a Nytro MTX boosted and couldn't wait to get back on an Apex again. The Nytro just reminds me too much of the Phazer handling. Too tippy and twitchy and high centered. I never had the confidence on it that I had on the Apex.
That being said many many guys are loving the Nytro and would never ride an Apex again. I find the Ape is just so predictable and consistent where the Nytro will toss you if you push it too hard. And you can't beat the sweet sound of the 4 holer and the looks IMO.

Hmms, Isn't the Nytro easier to sidehill than the Apex?

Gah, can't decide ;/
Only one thing for sure and thats the sled will be boosted, apex or nytro.
You sure think the apex is easier in the woods?

I would say in deep powder riding trees the Nytro would be better suited and less tiring to ride.

Thanks for your help
Well this is Sweden so many days we have snow condition something between powder and hardpack...
High on the mountains where its no trees, its more or less always hardpack.
So I ride little of both. You think the apex is better on hard pack? From what I hear the Nytro -10 is aaaaloot better then previous years nytros on basically everything?

If you ride hard pack sometimes the nytro will wear you out faster.

I'll put my 2 cents worth in, I would vote for the Nytro, I have had 11 of the 4-strokes now have had every model except the Phazer, and they all have been bullet proof. The only thing I have had to do out riding to any of them is change a belt on one and adjust the TORS on one. I love the pull and sound of the Apex, but the Nytro is some much more fun to ride off trail. You are just as comfortable riding, standing up as you are sitting down. There are many times when I am trail riding with the Nytro that I will stand up and ride that way as long as I am going 60 MPH or less. You have had the Apex and will miss the power when you go to the Nytro, but if you are planning on boost, then that machine is a whole different animal. There is no way that I would take my Apex out in the powder or up the mountains out west like I do with the Nytro. The only thing I really miss on the Nytro that the Apex has, is the better dash. Yamaha must see that their customers are thinking the same thing, since they only offer the Mountain sled in the Nytro model starting this year. As long as you add boost you will never look back. If you leave it stock you will miss your Apex. Have a Great Winter, Dan

I have an 06 Apex Mtn stock. I do both trees and mtns. Wish I had tried the Nytro first. It's far more nimble in the trees.

alot of the preferences are related to the height and weight of the rider...and the riding style....the nytro needs tweaking to get the supsnsion to work as well and is way out from the correct shock and spring settings out of the box..
