Apex Ohlins Shock Rebuild

Anybody replacing the Ohlin shock with something else? Had mine rebuilt 4 times in 6000 miles, just checked it for the season and the clicker on the shock just spins smoothly. Here we go again.... :o|

Who has been doing your rebuilds?

Has it been revalved? From the factory, Yamaha had ohlins calibrate (valving and spring) these shocks for a 160 ish pound rider on nothing but plush trails.

Any shop that is familiar with these shocks, especially pioneer performance, knows that these ECS shocks work great with something closer to the European spec valving and spring rate.

Just rebuilding and riding as is, may result in repeated failures.

HyGear revalved, stacked spring set to my weight. They did my Fox floats up front with the additional
air chamber and they are perfect. I'm getting about 700 miles out of my rear Ohlin. I'm 190 with gear.

I meant I got 700 miles out of the last rebuild. HyGear did it, I'm going to call them in the morning. Maybe
something internal is worn or damaged?

Other than it blowing apart, like mine, how does one know when they are due for a rebuild? Will they turn into a pogo stick with little adjustment left in them?

I have never touched the clickers on my Phazer FX, and it has over 5000 miles on it. Shock service was never anything I thought of obviously. But I don't think I am alone here.

Thanks guys,

Thanks guys,

You will loose your rebound clicks. This means it has leaked and in need of service. I get mine done every season usually 3000kms of riding. This year had the seal head changed so will see if it last any longer.

Just got word from HyGear. Sound like those shocks all the way around were in need of some refreshed components.

I guess quite a bit of the rear Ohlins needed replacement. But it will be less than buying a new shock. They are ordering what is needed directly from Ohlins that they don't already have! If I bought used, who knows the shape it would be in.

I guess the coating on the inside of the fronts was wearing out as well and working on the actual aluminum. So they would have been the next to go.

So all this comes down to the reason why most get their shocks rebuild annually if not just for the inspection of the internal components. I only hope some future owner of my Apex appreciates the care that has been done to the components out of site as much as those that can be seen!! (that is if I were to ever sell it)

Some internal damage. $175 plus shipping and I'm back on the snow!
Gonna make it a habit to send in every october to have it checked!

WOO WOO! Got the shocks back from HyGear. They are all in near perfect shape with all worn components replaced, recharged and setup for my weight.

I'm jacked to get out and test them out. I'm always amazed at the weight of the Apex skid every time I have to take it out or replace it by myself. It must weigh as much as some others complete sled!! HA!!

Next time my Ohlins needs repair I am replacing it with the ER shock. I rode my 06 GT for a trip with the ER shock in while the Ohlins was being rebuilt. Rode great didn't miss the gold spring at all.
