Apex oil tank repair

I wondering what you guys do the fix the oil tank bung breaking off the oil tank it seems to me that the tank is made out of stainless steel on the bung is aluminum.. I’m i right presuming that...?

i'd get a new or good used tank instead. not sure what the material is, not in front of it right now

The tank is aluminum. Mine leaked at the seams, and a welder tried but didn't work, so I used PC7 epoxy (similar to jb weld, but better, imo) which can be smoothed with lacquer thinner before it hardens. Worked great. But I bought another tank anyway...aftermarket.
 
sounds like that would work in a pinch but don't think i'd trust that. my luck it would leak and end up blowing the motor 100's of miles from no where
 
CFM Performance ATV sells an amazing aftermarket tank for $200.
OEM is $260 to $300.
You can buy them used for $50ish, but i wouldn't risk it...
 
That tank is beautiful. My 2012 is starting to leak. I have yet to pull the tank to see where it is coming from, but I cannot see any visible cracks. Just a thin line of oil around the seam. And the dipstick is not showing low. But there is definitely oil in the belly pan below the tank.

Nothing hit the floor till after I got in some deep snow getting some under the hood. Well it washed some oil out and onto my floor and found it to not dry up. Ahhh, oil. FAAACK!

So I suppose I could run this till spring and monitor my oil level and do it in the office season. But I may drain the oil in the tank and pull it to inspect where it's coming from. Maybe a JB Weld fix is appropriate till I can replace it.

I'm gonna have to stop bragging about my miles on this trail tank. It's jinx's me every time.

Like I've posted, I have 3 PC7 repaired tanks out there in friend's sleds and one was attempted to be welded and wound up with holes....the seam seeps. The trick is to smooth and feather edge the pc7 with lacquer thinner before it hardens. Work's every time. I did buy that same aftermarket tank but the supplied gasket (no o ring) leaked...lmao!!!! Finally I took a 45 degree carbide chamfer tool and made an o ring seal. It's OK now, but my fixed tanks are out there not leaking....for years. I ask the guys every time I see them. No leaks. I like PC7 better than jbweld.
This is my first attempt years ago, and the tank they burned holes in trying to weld. It is the spare when one leaks, as it takes a day or so for the pc7 to harden. My newer fixed ones are much nicer looking, but this one hasn't leaked either.

Perfect, thanks for the heads up on the PC 7 Sump Buster. That's worth a shot for all of $4 in epoxy at Lowes. I will see how much I am losing for now, and possibly do it with my next oil change. Since I will have to drain it either way.

It's not losing very much right now, but it does bug me. I saw lots of oil tank threads over the years, but I always assumed it was the older generation Apex's that it was happening with. I didn't realize this was not addressed in the newer sleds.

You're welcome! Just don't use nitrile gloves to smear the pc7 with the laquer thinner...use your fingers. Sure, your finger will turn white (and gray...it gets sticky when the thinner dries) and I'm sure I absorbed some, causing brain damage.....what other reason could make me buy a cat based Yamaha????
