found out today when i was talking to my wife on the trail that my apex overheated and shut it self off. didnt realized that it had a self safety protection system. when i walked over too i saw the light was on so turned key off and let it set for a couple of minutes then started right back to see the light was still on so i took off into the powder and it went right off and didnt bother the rest or the ride.

Time to talk to the spouse about "dipping" in the snow from time to time on the roads/hardpack. Eh? Been there. Go gently. This is scary to them.

myn did the same thing today i had it idleing and it just shut itself off and the fan kicked in so i left it off and let it cool down then took it later i kinda like how it does that liek shuts itsslef off when its to hot

Hey guys, as I understand it, it is not good to run them up so hot they use the auto shut off. Might want to think that over a bit. But, I am sure no one is letting that happen intentionally. Right?

this is my second apex and no i wouldn't let them run for so long after te light had came off to shut off. just didnt know it would do it but soem glad that it did before any damage happened. trust me i'll be keeping an closer eye on it. had my er over heat last yr because of poor snow condtions but it didnt shut off as i turned it off before it did i guess.

Last year, a friend with my old 01 Machz triple fouled 2 plugs (don't miss those days), it was raining, etc, so I parked with the engine running and lights on his sled to change them. Then my Apex shuts off...I wasnt' sure what was up, but figured it must be a heat thing. It started right back up, but the coolant really wasn't that hot at all...there must be a huge safety margin built in. It was no where near overheating.
hey SUMPBUSTER your buddy's very slow at changing plugs! LOL!

I am sure that Yamaha designed a conservative safety margin in the shut down circuit. I wouldn't think that they would design it so that engine damage would occur before shutting down.
Mine has shut down a few times while idling for long periods of time. I now have a digital water temperature gauge so I will check at what temperature the shut down occurs at next time.
I believe that the shut down safety is only active during idling. When you are riding I do not think that it will shut down as they expect the operator to notice the warning light and take appropriate measures.

they are designed to shut off after 15min. of idle time.
but what i dont remember is, does every apex/attak have a fan on the radiator? i would think the fan would kick on before severe overheating would happen.

mine wasnt running no where near that long before it shut off and my fan was on. still to find out if the antifreeze on these 2 sleds are pure or a mixed. wifes vector heated up after a 3 mile ride when the snow cond. sucked.

Antifreeze typically comes concentrated. You end up draining and adding water to get to the 50/50 blend. But, ... when I blended mine, I did it in small steps and kept measuring it to ensure I did not go to far with the dilution.

so how did you measure the to find out how it was mied or did you just guess? did you add water or is it better to drain it and add a premix so it will correct.Len Todd said:Antifreeze typically comes concentrated. I ended up sucking about a quart of antifreeze out of mine and then added distilled water and about 6oz. of Redline Water Wetter to mine. It is still protected past -45F and doesn't overheat in low snow anymore and it takes almost 15 minutes of idling for the light to come on even in 50+F temps. Iknow this because I start mine throughout storage and always let it warm thoroughly. Gene

According to the manual, after the sled has been running for at least 3 minutes it will shut down the engine when the coolant reaches 212° Fahrenheit. I assume that the sled will idle for as long as it takes to reach 212° Fahrenheit but after after 3 minutes. So it could shut down after 3 minutes or 15 minutes ect., but the sled will continue to run intill it reaches that temp.
