All,
On the weekend I went on a trip out of town after getting my sled all serviced for the winter with a new battery, plugs and exhaust donuts.
Day 1 saw us put on 200km on fairly nice trails. At the start of Day 2, after about 10km, my sled started to spit and sputter and stall. It would start again and idle perfectly fine but after the clutches engaged and driving maybe 100 metres, it would start again. One time letting out a huge backfire.
So i did notice that there was some steam coming from the handle bars. This makes me wonder if the header is cracked. Although the dealer told me it was fine.
My question is, would a cracked header cause these symptoms? And is there a way I can pull the code prior to taking it to the dealership?
Thanks!

sounds like tors to me you will get steam by handle bars sometimes if you get powder in there probably not the prob. check watter level first then search TORS on here to see how to over ride it and try that if it is it will code but only while it is sputtering

Agree it could be any of the above comments. Also, my exhaust donuts did similar to you description, but not to as bad of degree as you describe.. When you start up the sled on a cold winter morning, if you see a lot of smoke from handlebars, that would be donuts or header
Bummer..bad gas can scrap out plugs, how did it run before this happened? is it any louder?

Update: Dealer finally reproduced the issue and the diagnostics are telling them that the ecu is losing power.
Has anyone had this problem? Any idea what an ecu is going to run me?
Sled only has 7663km on it and I maintain it well. If the ecu is done already I will have to say that my luck with Yamaha products is very disappointing.

ECU losing power??
You stated you put in a new battery, correct?
1st thing I'd be checking is the battery connections & make damn sure they are TIGHT. The slightest movement in the cable to terminal connection will cause missing/sputtering/backfiring. Ask me how I know.... quick storytime kids.
My neighbor/riding buddy has an '06 Apex, and one day when we were out he said it was sputtering & occasionally backfiring. Next time out... nothing, ran great. Then one day he went out alone, was 50 miles from home & it was acting up BAD!! So he called it quits at the nearest town, called me & I rescued him with the truck & trailer.
The next day we rode it around our houses trying to get it to stutter, finally it did. We went as far as to swap fuel pump & ignition relays from my '06 Apex to see if that helped... nope. Unhooked TORS... nope. Finally we checked the battery connection, slight movement by hand on the positive cable. Pulled both pos & neg off, one tiny drop of loctite on each, cranked them down tight, let it sit for a couple hours, sled hasn't missed a beat since.
Start with the battery connections, you might be surprised.

warning-There is usually several answers to one question. That means there is more misinformation than correct info. Read your manual. It comes with the sled, and is in the rear storage compartment.

Dealer called and with the help of Yamaha Service Reps, the problem was diagnosed as a speed sensor and jackshaft bearing issue.

If the speedo sensor had failed, it would have thrown a code. Also, then the TORS would have gone off (assuming it's still hooked up) Maybe this is what you experienced?? Code 42?? if I remember correctly??
I had a speedo sensor fail on my '06 Nytro. It would idle, but as soon as the clutches engaged, and moved maybe 50 yards, it would stutter bad & try to kill. I could shut it off, restart the engine and drive, but as soon as I let off totally to an idle, the TORS would go off. I bet I had to shut off & restart the engine 50 times or more to get home

The CPU kept throwing the code, but with the TORS unhooked, it couldn't phuck me over and stall the sled. I don't know if this would work on the FI sleds, but it works on the carbed ones.

I agree that it seems odd. Obviously the bearing has no impact here but not sure if the speed sensor should cause the symptoms.

theCATman,
What you described is exactly to a "T" what I experienced. It would start and idle fine. Then when clutches would engage it would spit and sputter and try to stall. I could only go 20 yards at best. I finally threw in the towl and said tow me home boys. Being at least 20km from our starting point that day it would have taken me forever to get back. I do not have TORS disconnected so I guess that's what was happening. As for the codes, I was not told there were any codes being logged. When I go pick it up I will ask them.
Thanks for sharing your experiences. I feel a bit better that the problem may have been diagnosed correctly and fixed right the first time, rather than throwing parts at it and costing me a small fortune. Here's hoping anyway.
