APEX "STEALTH " NEW MODEL

Great post by Rocket!

I, too would like a quieter exhaust. Would it be crazy to assume that the current exhaust could be quieter without totally re-designing it?

Could there be an exchange program where you sent your exhaust in for additional "silencing"??

We've got all summer to explore options...

I 100% agree with Rocket. If he was to attempt to design a quiet exhaust he would be throwing money away.

On the other than if Yamaha made a very quiet sled (not just exhaust - track, drivetrain, etc.) and marketed it right it might work on the bottom line. It would definitely take some pressure of us from the tree huggers.

Cat right now has the quietest sleds and the guys I've spoken to that ride their 4-strokes really enjoy the quiet ride.

Look at the market for premium high performance cars like Lexus, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, etc. There's definitely demand for them.

REx,
That is my point.
I appreciate WHite knuckle honest response and not mean to imply it was an after market oppurtunity.
I think Yamaha could develope this so much easier, they have quiet golf cart's, bikes and Toyota/lexus car motors, even many inline 4's to borrow technology from.
I would love the option of quiet Power.

I can see/hear it now, WOW did you see that, I could hardly hear it. Yeah and its fast too.

I personally think it is more of an issue for track howl than exhaust.

Well,
If you guys want a quieter sled then you have to keep on your dealer and on Yamaha all the time. One thing I have learned here is that what a manufacturer builds is depandant on what marketing tells them the customer wants. I'd bet that right now Yamaha marketing is telling yamaha brass that the consumer wants their 4 stroke to have a mean exhaust note that will pass the ssca tests.

As to how to make the stock quieter. How much power are you guys willing to lose? I can tell you some pretty simple things that might help, but you'd be choking your sled down a little.

To be honest I wouldn't want to modify my exhaust to make it quieter.

If the manufacturer made it quieter stock you definitely wouldn't hear any complaints from me and if it had a nice solid feel and sound to it (kindof like a high end car) I would like it even more.

The only time I really found the RX-1 too loud was late night riding past houses. Most of the noise at the time was actually the track (last season's track was a howler - this season's was quiet).

I know some guys were putting exhaust extensions on, pointing toward the ground, that would quiet it down a tad.

But the track, and engine sucking sound is going to be there.

My 06 Attak was one of the noisyest sleds I've ever owned! I put 4000 miles on and it never got quieter. It also was the best handling/riding sled I've ever driven. I ordered an 07 Attak GT. If I could change one thing it would be the overall noise level. studdog

Rocket,

You almost have the makings of a MasterCard Commercial there.

"Doing something you love like fabricating, and riding all sorts of snowmobiles...PRICELESS"

Thanks for the inside track on what an Aftermarket operation takes/costs.

Best of luck to you!

I prefer hearing the motor running than the track turning... you will always have a noise on a snowmobile... specially at 100 mph... :drink:

My buddys zr900 with Diomond drive.. is very quiet.. EXPECT the super charger sound coming from the diamond drive..

sounds kinda cool.. whines like a blower

A quieter APEX?? why thats one nice sounden sled wish my Nytro had that high pitch to it, that diamond drive if ya ride it to hard i heard ya have to put more transmission oil in it? Saw a guy with a 900 riden it pretty hard on a lake had to put oil in the sled from the bottom of the sled idk seems weird to me.
