I have a new Apex RTX and am having problems dialing in my suspension. I weigh 230 lbs dressed, have the stock rear spring and started with standard factory settings. I currently am not studded but will install 144 when more snow falls. I ride pretty hard and ride some pretty bumpy trails. I adjusted rear spring to stiffest setting and found much less bottoming out. I have not adjusted control rod and have not adjusted fox floats up front. I am pretty happy with the front suspension.
My questions are...besides losing 30 lbs, what can I do to help rear suspension out? Is the stiffer spring definately in order? The only reason I am hesitant to buy the stiffer spring is the fact that a friend of mine with an Apex ER weighs only about 190 lbs and has the same problems.
If you were my size and rode some pretty bumpy trails on occassion, where would you set the rear spring, control rod, dampening clicker, and fox float pressure. I guess I need a better starting point to dial it in.
Thanks for the help. :ORC

Save yourself alot of greef and order the H.D. Spring.. its about $100
I weight 195 and can bottom out my rear suspension VERY HARD on big mogals and rollers! (I DO HAVE MY REAR SPRING MAXED)
Yamaha should have maxed out the rear spring for sled riders under 200 from the get go... It does very well under 98% of the junk... but the big ones make her bottom hard!
Set the fox floats at 35psi..
adjust the rear spring at max (if you want to try that first) (clicker at middle)
once you adjust the spring it eliminates alot of the ski lift under hard throttle..
Leave the transfer rod in the middle or maybe a bit to the LEAST amount!

O.K. I will order the Heavy spring but it surprises me that the stock spring isn't enough for a 190 lb rider such as yourself and my friend.
I will say that I am happy with the way it is steering. Transfer seems to be good, front end doesn't lift much when cornering and seems to absorb the big ones pretty good.
why set the floats at 35PSI seems a little low, I think I am at 60 PSI right now.

The sled is soo awsome that you can ride it alot faster threw really nasty stuff (more than any yamaha ever made) and because of that you can Pound the crap out of the rear suspension and cause it to bottom..
Ive never riden a yamaha that could take the beating i gave my GT in the U.P. on the T.Y. ride
Just ask MR SLED (tom) how rough that trail was i was going 70+mph on and it just gets smoother the faster you go.. Harder on the throttle the better!
I could be wrong but i thought standard PSI for the floats was 35... But hey.. if 60 is working for ya ,dont change it..
Hope this helps..

Before you go an order a new spring take the shock out and have your dealer put it on either the second or third clip. Dealers really need to be educated on this. Seems like they get them and don't even bother any setup for anyone.
This will stiffen it up considerably.

The manual on the Fox floats is between 50-150 psi.. 35psi seems very low to me too.

Moving the spirng cam up to the second groove makes huge differences. Id try that before buying a stiffer spring.. This same advice was given to me by Bruce Shrader at Pioneer performance, it worked great for me. Im about 235ish in my gear.

Rear Shock Clip???
Where is this clip? Is it on the shock itself? I don't have my sled in front of me right now....but am looking on Yamaha's web site at the parts breakdown for my sled. I can't seem to see where there would be any adjustment other than the "cam" adjustment on the shock.
Also, you are probably right about my dealer. He is a first year Yamaha dealer and isn't very in tune with the sleds yet. I am confident he will get there but it will be end of season before that happens. :ORC

if you are lying on the ground look up under where spring is it will push forward. and there is a clip that you can adjust to stiffer in three poss. try the middle first. on clip setting three its very stiff. then you can adjust the shock and go back to the dial on outside for little changes.

Do I have to compress the spring in order to slide the collar up and expose the clip?

Yes you need to compress the spring, a few guys have actually done it on the sled, but its a easy job to remove the whole shock if you wish. The clip itself can be moved with your bare hands, but its hidden under the collar of the cam adjuster.

I say move the clip also. Yes it's best to remove the shock from the sled...15min job. Then compress the spring. I compressed it enough to remove the retainer ring @ top and then took the spring off in order to move the circlip into the 3rd position. My stock setting was 1st clip and #4 on the cam. I'm 275lbs w/o gear. I lost all my snow and haven't tried it out yet. I have read that some guys had issues with the mono last year when they preloaded the spring on the 3rd clip? I have asked a few times about this topic and haven't had to many responses. Why would Yamaha make the 3rd clip position if it ruins the shock? A $100 is a $100 dollars, if it still bottoms or looks like it's hurting the shock, I'll use the heavier spring, but I just don't think alot of people have tried this set up yet. So for now it's on the 3rd clip, cam#1. Weight transfer set in the middle and front floats at 65psi no load.
Good advice here:

I'm about 235 before gear. Put the C-clip on the second setting before buying a new spring (just my opinion). Plenty of guys have had success with that. The floats seem to be good between 55 - 70 PSI (measured with skis off the ground). You might also reduce the transfer rod setting a little (1/8 inch is a good start).
Let us know how it works out.
