Ever since I bought my 2007 Attak I have notice that the handlebars are off to the right when riding straight. I have had it to two dealers and neither have solved the issue. both have said the skis are aligned properly etc. I exclaim that I know the ski's may be aligned but the handlebars are not! Needless to say this drives me batty. I ended up adjusting the toe out the other night. First off I was dismayed when I saw that whoever set the thing up in the first place basically adjusted the skis using only the outside tie rod end. I evened this all out so that both sides would have equal adjustment etc. I thought I had the bars aligned perfect, well I did, but yesterday I hit a big bump and now it seems that the bars alignment is off again to the right! Got home and checked my toe out and ski alignment. Seems dead on. I will try loosening the riser block and see if it just shifted a bit.

My question is I know that I can adust the handlebars so they are pointed straight by adjusting the tie rods on the skis but in doing so you have to mess with both sides. I see there is an adjustment off of the steering stem by the brake. This seems like the most straight forward place to just adjust the bars. What do I need to remove to get at this adjustment and how much of a chore is it going to be?

Start with the slop in the risers. There is a whole bunch of slop in those four bolts. You would be amazed how you can rotate the bars and riser.

The other option if you can't get it at the riser bolts, is to remove the seat and tank to get at the tie rod nut at the steering post and outer shaft linkage.

How can the Dealers be so incompetent? Wait, don't answer that. Common sense can go a long ways.

Common sense aint so common anymore. Especially when it comes to the stealers....errr, I mean dealers.

When I picked up my sled at my local dealer (that will remain nameless to protect the guilty) I took it for a short test ride before loading it up and I was quite dismayed to find the handlebar alignment was more than just a little bit off.

The dealer had already given me the pre-delivery check list that stated that they had test driven the vehicle and the handlebar alignment box was checked off on the list!

They were too busy to fix it right then and I did not want to have to bring it back so I just fixed it myself. That dealer will never see my sled again unless I need warranty repairs which I will double check myself.

Blue Dave how did you adjust your handlebar alignment? I want to do this before my next ride. The dealer has it now because it looks like the rear mono shock has expired!

loligager,

I adjusted the threaded steering rod ends. I had to lengthen one side and shorten the other in order to center the handlebars and maintain ski alignment. The inner rod ends are much easier to get to if you turn the steering full lock each way and then slide the rubber boot in to expose the lock nut.

I too have my handlebars off kilter after having the dealer have to pull my motor some time ago. I'm guessing they had to disconnect the linkage to get it out, but just guessing. It's annoying, and wish there was a simple linkage that could be adjusted.

If anyone has photos to help with the post, that'd be great. Joel

Attak handlebars to the right

Sorry to bring this back up...

So my ski's are aligned nicely, toed out perfectly but my handlebars are off to the right by enough to drive me nuts whenever I ride it. Been that way since I got it new from the dealer. I know I can adjust the steering by realigning the skis and adjusting them to pull the handlebars back straight. I see on the Yamaha Fiche that there is also a linkage that looks like it would be the ticket to adjust the handlebars without messing with the ski alignment. My question is how do I get to it? What do I need to take apart? What tools are needed? Would that be more of a hassle then just go through the knuckle busting ordeal of adjusting the skis to get the bars right?

Mucho Gracious in advance!

Loosen the four bolts that hold the bars and risers tight to the steering post first.
There is a lot of slop there! 90 percent of the time this will take care of it.

If you cant get it there, you can take the tank off to get to the linkage your talking about, but it is much easier to lengthen one side of the rod attached to the ski and shorten the other one.

Thanks KnappAttack. I tried the steering post, not enough slop there to get it right. Looks like I will just do the ski's and be done with it. Cripes you'd think the dealers would set that up right out of the gates!!!

A good dealer would make sure that all of the adjustments are correct. Unfortunately good dealers are hard to find.

I have the same problem and could not get it at the tie-rods. I will try the 4 bolts, plus I need to add a riser anyway.

Turn the steering full lock each way and push the rubber boot in to get at the inner tie rods.

Take the secondary off to have limited access to the linkage just above the exhaust manifold heat shield. You must use a long extension with a crow's foot (12mm or 14mm - I don't remember off hand). Loosen the lock nut on each end of that linkage and turn the actually linkage rod in the desired direction. You'll be able to see your handlebars turn. Once completed, tighten the locknuts. You'll will have to alternate sides when tightening/loosening and above all, you'll need lots of patience. This is the way I did it without removing the gas tank.

In the FAQ post for replacing the exhaust donuts, there is a pretty good step-by-step for taking the shrouds, seat, & gas tank off. The linkage you need to adjust is wide open with the tank off...I just went through this to fix my donuts and adjusted the steering at the same time. It also allows you to grease lower steering bushing. It's not as bad as it looks to get at.
