I need help guys... my 2007 yamaha apex RTX has just started to back fire! It seems to do it only when i let off the throttle completely at low RPMs it will back fire and shoot flames out of the exhaust :o| It has now seemed to wear out the exhaust doughnuts in one day. any suggestions? thanks it also steams from under the headlight

I think you found the problem already. The exhaust donuts aand possibly your y-pipes are broken at the flange as well.

Thank you and do you have any suggestions for what kind of exhaust doughnuts to get? because I already changed them once and this will be the 3rd set of exhaust doughnuts it 4200 miles! I appreciate it

Hey Blake , don't let dad help you this time !! Just kidding . Doc

I would check over the whole exhaust there are lots of places that it could be cracked you get flames when you have a small air leak and back fires when there is a big leak also what temp are you riding in? mine was backfireing a bit last week before i traded it in but i know it was all tight with the exception of one damaged clamp where the y pipe goes into the silencer and that was what allowed mine to breath flames out the back when i would let off after a wot run. steam from under the light is most times from riding in powder and it is falling on the hot exhaust. may all be from warmer temps may be a cracked pipe but if you are going thru donuts did you grind dow the stops on the clamps a little so they get and stay tight? That was the end all for the 3 i have been taking care of for me and my buddies. got 3500 mi on one so far and 1500 on another with the grind fix and so far so good.mine had 2500 on the last fix when i traded it.proir i was having a set put in yearly under the yes waranty. Alot of people like the copper donuts from sled toyz.

to doc: yeah I suppose I will need help from a Tractor mechanic instead!! :moon:

to thor: I will start the tear down tommorrow and check the whole exhaust over and what do you mean by the grind down fix? just grind down the stops? will be informing everyone of how it goes! thank you

mr spade yes grind down the stops on the clamps so they close a little more.
