I was wondering why Yamaha did not make the backrest on the 05 RS Venture adjustable for one up riding?? Most touring sleds have that ability, I think Yamaha dropped the ball on that one. I think with a little thinking they could have put together a nice system and not have had to mess with the exhaust or frame. I know weight was probably an issue, but I think the option of having an adjustable backrest after a long day outweighed any disadvantage pertaining to the extra weight involved.
Anyhow, I am looking at trying to figure out a way to make the backrest adjust straight forward somehow.
Is there an after market system all ready on the market for the 05's that could be used?
Any comments or ideas would be appreciated.

Please understand that this is an opinion based reply.
Everyone I know who solos on a 2up machine leaves the backrest in its back position.
They do not like the backrest hitting them during bumps or restricting their mobility on the seat.
Not sure if this is why Yammie didnt make it adjustable but I thought I would throw it out.
I will ride my RS Venture solo a lot, and I will remove the backrest altogether during these times. Just my .02

It is difficult to know why. My guess would be one of these.
Sombody hit a bump and came down on the damn thing and hurt their back. so for product liability reasons it was deleted.
or
Like our family situation. My wife has an 01 venture. One time I put it forward for her and she thought it had no value. I actually thought the same thing, but that is just us. So we only did it that one and only time. Those screw knobs can be a pain too because if you dont keep after them they will vibrate loose and they fall off on the trail.
or it was eliminated to save weight/cost.
That said, everybody has different tastes and needs, I respect that. But short of working with a machine shop to fabricate something, I have a feeling you are SOL.
I love those venture mirrors, and I really think you bought a great sled.

backrest
I understand your points of view, I guess I am just used to moving the backrest forward sometimes. My last two sleds have been Ski Doos with the adjustable backrests on them and in the last 8 yrs I put a little over 29,500 miles on them combined and I bet 1/4 of those miles I Had the backrest moved forward. On a long day of riding if your on smooth trails it is nice to lean back and just cruise. But to each his own.
I am looking forward to putting some miles on the Venture, it sure seems to be a nice put together sled.
My dealer did say he heard Yamaha is possibly looking at doing something different with the backrest and luggage rack for next years model of the Venture. The smart thing to do is wait and see if I like the sled to begin with ( which I think I will). He also heard that the system they do come out with will probably fit onto the 05 models.

I too tried riding with the backrest forward on my "old" Ventures and it did nothing for me. On another related note, I was surprised to find out on the '05 Venture that there was no storage room at all under the seat. I know that you can remove the seat & get a piece of Yamaluggage to put in its place, but that seems a little hokey to me. What's wrong with the idea of leaving the seat on & just strap a bag onto the seat???

You can do that also.. They have bags or saddle bags for the venture..On my Vector because of the lack of a rear truck I put a handlebar bag on. works nice for the things I would put in my trunk on my other sleds.MM.

I was also disapointed with the back rest and rear lugage rack . But with my 97Venture I only moved the back rest forward once and found that I sat to far forward for it to do any good . For storage I bought a air plane cary on bag and addapted it to fit on the back rack .it is not quite as big as the bag I had on the 97 but now I don't have to cary extra oil and gas line antifreeze. I still have the option of saddle bags or a tank bag . I think it is all a matter of getting used to some thing new . All I want to do now is ride .

I would have to agree 110%. This is one of my biggest issues with the machine. Last spring I sold my 2001 Venture which had an excellent adjustable backrest and lots of storage space in the accessory rack.
The optional accessory rack that Yamaha has developed for the Venture is not real appealling either and will eliminate the easy removal of the 2up seat and backrest. With this thing installed you will need to take the wrenches out to remove the seat.
The yamaha brochure actually states "friendly ergonomically adjustable backrest". So I called Yamaha Canada to find out what's up and they stated it was a spec change since the brochures were printed.
I think Yamaha took a step backwards on this one.

We havn't got the accessorie catalogue yet .So I havn't seen what they have . I Made my own rear bag and so far I am quite happy with it . I don't want to spend a lot on a bag that I don't really like . I think we will see some good stuff from the after market guys by next fall . I had a bag on my 97 that was great ,I got it from Royaldistributing.com They have nothing so far .I would like to see a hard shell that fits where the rear seat is ,with it off .Some thing like what you see on the Gold wing motor cycle would be nice for a three day trip .

Accessory catalog is not due out until Jan 05 in Canada. However, I do have pics of what Yamaha has developed as an accessory rack for the Venture but I can't seem to post them. I get an error.

I have come up with a quite ingenuous solution
that allows the existing backrest to be used for a single rider or two rider position.
In fact in a single rider position the back rest is even adjustable to three
different positions to allow the rider
to customize his position.
I have built an original prototype and have fitted my sled with it.
It's quite simple and other than having this piece made it only requires
three holes to be drilled in the support of the back rest for adjustment
purposes
If anyone is interested, leave me your coordinates in your replies.
Come see my add it's under RS VENTURE back rest posted by rcb.
I will add pictures in the near future.
