Battery dead?

Friend has an 06 Attak. Original battery. Sat all summer in garage. Started up with no problem in the fall. I changed the oil and filter in it and obviously had to remove the battery. I threw it on the Optimate charger and in about 1/2 hour it went to green. Installed back into sled and it started up with no problem. He also had the dealer do clutch work and they had no problem starting it. Well, thanks to our stellar winter, the sled then sat for about a month in a trailer. We went up to Tug Hill this week and it wouldn't start. It was about 15F. Not cold. Turned over very slow. Jumped it off the truck and rode. It started every time after that. The next day it also started with no problem but he is still buying a new battery. I told him to check the battery connections thinking that maybe I didn't tighten them but he said they were tight with dielectric grease on them.

What do you guys think? Has the battery finally given up? It is 6 years old. Anything else we should look at?

6 years of use out of a seasonal battery is probably about all you can expect depending on how the battery was maintained. Since it has failed on a sled trip I would simply replace it now for peace of mind.

With regular use of my Optimate 4 I have been able to keep some of my seasonal use batteries in serviceable condition for up to 8 years. However with a 4 stroke sled that is impossible to pull start in cold weather I will probably replace mine next season after 5 seasons of use just for peace of mind.

Thanks for the replies. He replaced it. We are heading to Quebec next week so glad it happened now!
