I was just wondering, what is the best thing to do with the battery to my 05 RX-1 for the summer? Should I hook it up to a battery tender and leave it hooked up all summer? Or should I just leave it on a block of wood in my basement all summer and hook it up to the tender for a few weeks before I run it next season? I am being real picky about maintaning the battery because lets face it....with these machines if the battery konks you are screwed. I just want to do things right for a little peace of mind.

I've never used the tender. Spoke with the neighbor and he is now a big believer in it. However, there are good and bad tenders he said. He recommended one, can't remember.

I like to start mine up once a month and let it warm-up and at the same time I always check my battery with a volt meter tester and if I see its below 12.4 volts I trickle charge it for 24 hrs.with a 1 amp charger that I bought at Canadian Tire for $10...its always worked for me so far, don't over charge it or forget to remove the charger. 8)

I thought there is a special charger for these batteries? My dealer told me a normal trickle charger does not do the job.

The generating system in the sled is not any different than any other except for rare earth magnets and quality so any charger would work I would think. I just start mine once a month let it warm up to operating temp run the track to move the oil in the chaincase and turn over the bogie wheel bearings. Wish I could grease the bearings in the bogie wheels.

I have a "Battery Tender Jr" that my dealer reccomended. Works very well and only charges the battery when it falls below 12V. These along with the Optimate II Battery Charger are what you are thinking of. The Optimate is sold in the Yamaha parts and accesory catalog.

I can't fire it up just once a month, so I fire it up once a week. I guess that I'am just a Turbo.... holic somthing about that sound just drives me crazy. :drink:

The charger of choice for this style of battery is the Optimate III sold by Yamaha or through most aftermarket distributors. The Optimate III was specifically made to charge maintenance free style batteries and can be left plugged in and hooked up all off-season. It will monitor the battery and charge it when necessary. Yamaha has a very good price on these as most aftermarkets retail them for more than Yamaha does. Here is a link to this charger on our website. Just scroll part way down the screen and you will see it.
