I guess my original battery in my '05 RX-1 is junk. I went to get it ready for the season and of course it wouldn't turn over, only clicked. I put it on a trickle charge for over a day and tried again. Nothing. Do I have to get one from a dealership/factory Yamaha battery? Or can I get one from any battery place? It was suggested to me that if I want a reliable one (since that's the only way to start this sled) that I should get an official factory RX-1 battery. I will if I need to, but if I could get one for less I figured I'd save a few bucks. Any thoughts? Or is there an even better one than the one that originally came in it?
 
What are you using for a charger? Optimate or Battery Tender? A car charger will not work efficiently. It will actually shorten the life of the battery. These batteries need a charge one a month in the summer, using the right kind of charger. They will discharge just sitting there.

Actually, with the right kind of charger and a long (couple days) charge, you may be able to recover your old battery.
 
AGM type batteries are better but the Yuasa that came with it are pretty good as well. Do you have access to someone who has a optimate III charger or a battery tender which will desulphate the battery if need be. A lot of times with these batteries desulphating them brings them back to life. If i were buying a new battery for my sled it would be an odessey PC680. http://www.odysseyfactory.com/battspecs.html
 
I put in an Odyssey PC 545 battery last year in my Vector. Worked great, and you don't have to charge them over the summer. Worked when was -30 c as well. Put another one in my Warrior for this winter. You may need to shim or adjust the battery holder to get to fit properly as have different dimensions than the 20L - BS battery, depending on which Odyssey battery you get.

You see all kinds of posts on this all the time. I have 2 RX's and after both factory batteries crapping out the 2nd year I started running Wal-Mart batteries. The one in the 03 has been in there for 4 yrs with no tender on over the summer and was ridden over 6,000 miles last year in MN, WI, UP and Yellowstone (-30) and I have never had a starting problem.
 
I used an AGM battery for a R1 street bike and mounted it low in the chassis at the front of the bulkhead.

Am VERY happy with it!
Starts at -30.
Lower weight, and EASY oil filter changes!

Was $26 I believe on ebay.

Thanks for the replies. I was looking at the Odysseys and was wondering what exact model. I see there are a couple different of the 680's. There is the 680MJ and the 680MJT, besides just the 680. What's the difference?

The MJ stands for metal jacket and is not necessary for a sled it is for extreme hot temperture enviroment. The MJT is a metal jacket and a SAE terminal. I would look into the extreme to see if it will fit it has a lot more CCA and thats what you need in a sled battery and its an AGM. The PC680 will work as well but it only has 220 CCA the extreme has over 300. The warranty is better with the odyssey though either would be a good choice.

The CCA is decieving on these type of batteries. The CCA that is on a battery is the amps after cranking for 30 seconds, which no one really does. If you look at the 5 to 15 second cca of an odesey it is the battery number. so a 680 will have 680 for 5 sec 625 for 10 590 for 15 etc. I think the AGM is the same. thes faster begining crank is what makes them beter. Good to know then the PC680 is the one to get. I have this battery in my bike and it spins the motor better than the stock battery which is the same battery in the RX-1 sleds.
 
The 625 is as good and half price. Maxdlx
 
You may be right. Mine sits in the palstic battery cover from the stock set up. Got rid of the rest of the battery tray. Paul

That was the other thing I was wondering. Will the Odyssey fit without any modification? I only want to swap and not have to do anything else to get it to work/fit.
