Hi,
I just bought a 08 nytro and the battery would not keep its charge so I went and purchased a new one. After switching the old battery with the new one, I relized that the new battery would not keep its charged either.
Its only then that I started to check a few things.
I then fully recharged the new battery, and it now reads 12.7 v , but when I start my sled, should it go up to around 14?
Im no master mecanic, but it seems like its not charging my battery. Any where I can start to look? Im hopping it would only be a bad wire or something but would it be possible to have a bad stator? I only have 1500 km.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I just fixed my 08 that had the same problem, mine also would start and then die right away in addition to the battery going dead-- old one and new one. Go buy the starter solenoid and replace it. Mine was all corroded inside causing it to draw the battery and cause other odditys. I think I paid $40 for a new one.

The starter relay or solenoid as some people call it is located just right of your oil tank. It has a large red wire running into the left side and a large black wire running out the right which leads to the starter. I also had to replace mine this year. My sled would only start occasionaly. I grabbed one from Macleans in Saint John for 60 bucks. I didnt have any trouble with my battery going dead though. I would trace the the wires and make sure every thing is plugged in and there is no corrosion. If nothing seems out of place try checking your stator with a volt meter. If you have a manual you can find the specs in there. Good Luck.

I used the repair manuals on this site under the FAQ's and also have the service manual. I checked all circuits, relays and switches. But the oddest thing was when I hooked up my volt meter to the radiator shroud(both leads) I got voltage and not just .5 or less of a volt but 12.5 volts which was battery voltage at the time. I switched out the solenoid on a whim and it fixed it. I took the old one apart and it is full of green corrosion. The part where the fuses are slides off the top, that is where the corrosion starts and caused the issue.
Part number is 3EL-81940-02
If you want the service manual send me an IM with your email and I will send it to you.
