Bearing inspection

My lower chaincase bearing was installed backwards also. The seal was facing in the chaincase, the open face was facing towards the tunnel. Just and FYI.................Brian

What do we look for to check to make sure we don't have one installed backwards. Thanks guys.

Look underneath at the chaincase side of the drive shaft and you should be able to see the bearing seal It will be in the chain case housing (it will be smoth). If not and you see the bearing cage (it will be bumpy) then it is in backwards. I will try and get a pic later and post it

Not sure the bearing seal was in backwards.. Do a search of old threads, this has come up before. Some say the seal protects the bearing from the metal filings, but leaks enough oil to keep the bearing lubed. If the seal is installed on the track side, it might allow the filings to get int the bearing.
I don't have an opinion on what is "right", just passing along the info.

Do you know what size torx bit is need on the collar of the drive shaft bearing speedo side? I might want to add one to my spare tools.

SIZE OF THE TORX

NO BUT I DID THE SAME AND PUT THE CORRECT SOCKET IN THE TOOL SET. I WILL FIND OUT AND LET YOU KNOW. ALSO INCLUDE A 4 MM LOND ALLEN SOCKET TO GET THE AIR BOX CLAMP OFF.

Yes your're right on that comment, they install the seal on the oil side to keep filings out, their is a seperate oil seal on the oposite side (tunnel)to keep oil in, even if the seal is on the oil side oil can still get in the bearing without letting the fillings in to ruin it.

The torx size is #20 for drive shaft bearing collar on speedo side.
