Belt shredded on 09 Nytro xtx at 1900kms??

Hey my buddy has a 09 Nytro xtx he just bough used and his first ride he literally blew a belt to shreds?? There is only 1900kms on it. He as me if this was common as I own a 2010 xtx and previous to that I've owned a Rx-1 with no belt issues and I never herd of it? He was under the impression as myself that belts would last for ever on the Yammies?? Do it need a clutch aliment??

Not usually an issue on Yammys, however you never know how the previous owner treated the sled. Was it ever tweaked/crashed? That can throw the clutch out of alignment. A belt on a sled with 1900km (if that's true) that has ridden hard can shred a belt due to high temps.

I say pull the clutches apart, clean up the components, insure that everything is in good shape, undamaged and in alignment... put on a new belt and go from there.

What were the riding conditions like. Need more info. Was he hard on the throttle in deep snow. Only nytros I have known to blow belts in my riding group is from not giving the belt a break. His clutch was so hot you could fry a egg on it 10 minutes after he blew the belt. I checked it, Yamaha mechanic checked it and alignment was good . Another buddy has 4000 miles on the original belt. Heat will kill a belt.

Thanks guys for your imput. Not really sure what the back ground on the sled is however there are no signs of damage or repairs, the sled looks in mint condition. They day he was ridding it was on good trails around -5 catching some good speeds but not being reckless just having a good time. Again this was his first run on the used sled. Maybe it got heatted form the previous owner but the breaking point just happen when he got it????? My advice to him was replace it and keep a close eye to it for now if it happens with in a short time frame then get it checked out.

I had a similar issue with my 2011. The difference is I accidentially tried to take off with the parking brake on.. never used it on my old sled but for whatever reason had it on this time.My tech at the dealer said that was probably the issue. If it gets heated or glazed in one spot it gets weak there and the once you get on it.... kablammo. Lesson learned. If my belt slips or I forget and glaze it, on goes a new belt for safety's sake.

You should be able to hold your hand on the clutch face for about 30 seconds without pulling away. If not I would look into the clutching, maybe the secondary spring is wound to a different degree. Could be a different helix. But like you said who knows how the original owner treated it.

I remember reading a post somewhere about a guy testing belts for heat failure and he was talking about the color change on the sides of the belt. Some how it went like if the sides were greenish in color it was alright but if it looked yellowish gold then it was over heated and was destine to blow or vise versa. I think it was on a Ski doo forum and in the end in his own words he said I wish Yamaha would build belts for Ski Doo. BRP would only sell pistons then.

Just something I have always heard. 5 seconds would be long enough I guess. Probably take 2 seconds before the brain tells you it is to hot, by then it has already burnt your hand.

2 things from my experience. I had an 09 summit x and you could see if your belt was overheated by colour change. didn't mean it was ready to blow. Carry a spare belt we all know that. 2nd I am not touching a hot clutch with out some snow on my fingers. Not touching a hot clutch with my $150 mitts even if mommy tells me to.
