Anybody know how to stop a belt from squealing? I used Scotch Brite on my clutches, and replaced my belt, and now I have a squeal at idle. What should I do about this annoying issue? I put about 100 miles on the new belt, and stoped frequently, but it didn't seem to go away much, if any.

Did you recently set your belt deflection? sounds like you need to check it some new belts are shorter than others you might have to remove one thickness of washers.

Mine did the same once. Turned out my secondary clutch retaining bolt have FALLEN OFF.
Might check that. But if the bolt is there, this is most definitely a deflection issue...probably set too tight.

I feel like a complete dumbass, but I don't know what to do to set deflection? I thought the new belt sat the same on the secondary as the original. I did notice when I cleaned the clutches, there was a small amount of rubber built up on the shaft. I replaced it with the same Yamaha belt, and the old one was definately worn thinner.
Is this something that I could have adjusted for my old belt instead of buying a new one?
I needed a spare anyway!

nate, take your secondary off and the 3 bolts on the back should have washers on them just take 1 or 2 off and that will loosen your belt.these are little bolts nate 5 minute job have fun make sure you take off washers on all 3 bolts

Thats what I figured it was, but what are the correct settings/adjustments? What do you want to accomplish by adjusting it? Should I be ready to adjust at any time to account for wear?

i dont think nate there is a correct setting just when you hear you belt sqeel just adjust then i had mine really tight and it sqeeled all the time then i got sick of it and took out 2 washers from each bolt and once in a while i hear a little sqeel no biggy. i think you can adjust it for wear just depends on how high or low you want it to sit in your secondary

The belt needs to sit flush or slightly above the secondary. As your belt wears some it will start to sit lower in the secondary so you add washers to bring it back up. No belts are the same. Take 1 washer off of each of the 3 bolts on the back of your secondary and it should stop. If you need help, I'm in Tipton. I could run over sometime and show you how to do it. Maxdlx

i think you want to get the belt 1.5mm about secondary, yamaha has a .5mm and a 1mm washer for adjusting, i try to keep my belt just alittle bit above the secondary before it starts to squeal

I can handle that no problem, but thanks! I just was curioius as to weather or not I should look to adjust it periodicaly.
If that is the case, I probably could have adjusted it instead of buying a new belt.
I also had problems hitting my rev limiter, which I didn't notice as much after replacing the belt. I figured since my belt sat lower in the secondary, it would be higher in the primary at any given rpm, so it might have pushed me just into the rev limiter. Does anybody have the same issue(s)?
I thought about adjusting my clutch so it didn't seem to be "on the edge" of needing maintainence and adjustment(s).
