Removing them opens the clutch plates, you can add washers for a used belt to get it to more life out of it. New belts don't need ant washers. I just went throught the same thing with belt squeal and even with no washers it was terrible, I ran the sled up till the rear clutch opened and sprayed it with pentrating oil, I think it was sticking a bit after it backshifts, ran it for 2 days now and no more squeal.

You sprayed the belt with penatrating oil??? YIKES I have 3 different brand new belts, and all 3 are very different in width. No wonder everyone complains about belt squeal, yami's quality control won't make 2 belts the same. Always gotta adjust the shims.

Take all the washers out and it should not squeal.
Put them back in till it does it again.
Remove one washer at a time till it stops.
Aftermarket belts I use two factory one.

I have noticed belt squeel only when putting a new belt on. One the belt breaks in, no more squeel. Try running the belt for 100-200 miles and I bet the squeel goes away.

I had the squeal and it turned out to be the sheaves, they were glazed and needed cleaning, it is faster and doesn't squeal and reverse is better too. This is after the 3rd season on my 06 ER. Each season I put on a new belt and it didn't start until the 3rd season. I beleve it was the primary that needed cleaning. grabs alot better now.

I guess I wasn't very clear, with the driven clutch engaged and closed on the belt , you can see the brass bushing the outside sheave slides on, that is what I spayed being carefull not to spray the belt ot the inside of the sheaves as that would destroy a belt. I think there was some grime built up on the bushing and that may have been what was causing the squeal. Just came in from a 160km run and still it's slient at last. Sorry for the confusion, my bad.

the three bolts need to be replaced from time to time. if you have belt squeal with no washers then the tips of the bolts have pounded down and need to be replaced. just replaced mine and the originals were 1/16 to 1/8 shorter.

New belts can vary in lenth to cause a squeel compared to the old belt you're replacing, I have measured new belts off the shelf and seen as much as 4-5 mm differance in lenth. First thing is to know that your C/C is right , yamaha belts to me always seem too short for ideal set-up for belt height on the secondary. You can adjust the secondary to get more life from the belt(as it wears) but your engagement will suffer (less smooth) because the primary sheave will have to travel further before it grabs the belt making it slightly higher engagement or "jerky". If you can get a new belt to not squeel and be just slightly above the secondary sheaves thats as good as it gets.

New belt (wider and not stretched out yet) equals need to have 2 or maybe 3 washers on each bolt, depending on width of washers.
Then as the belt wears and becomes thinner and stretches out you remove the washers one at a time from all 3 bolts. Really worn belts need no washers.
It's trial and error with each belt because no two belts are the exact same width.

That's said perfectly!!! Just add washers evenly on the bolts with a new belt until you achieve this.

Yamaha belt deflection is such a PIA I don't do it anymore just buy a new belt every 2 years or so.

I've been getting a bit of belt squeal on both my Apex and Vector, soon after they both turned 1,000 Kms on the Odo. Do you think there's been enough wear to start removing shims? Or, would it be more likely that the clutches need cleaning? My previous RX-1 used to do this as well, and I had learned to live with it, but these are relatively new sleds.
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Clean the clutches (I use steel wool and lightly brush surfaces, some use scotch pad dishwashing sponge; scrub then blow off with compresses air), if that doesn't work put 150 miles on to brake the belt in. If it is still squeeking the start working on washers.
On my old apex, I would put a new belt on and it would squeek while idling until I put about 150 miles on and broke the belt in. I don't think my clutches were out of alignment either because the belt would last 1500 miles no problem and that isn't just putzin around miles either.
