Bergstrom Skegs: to shim skis or not?

I installed the Bergstrom 6" Good & Ugly bars with the Ski Savers and set the sled on the ground and it appears that the skis are level-sitting right on the carbide with the front & rear of the bar off the ground.

For testing purposes, I placed a piece of rubber, just less than 1/4" thick between the rubber ski "bumper" and spindle bracket (to the rear of the spindle). By doing this, the carbide, as well as the rear hard-weld area of the bar contact the floor.

Has anyone run the bars, ski savers AND shims all at once? I'm going to try it w/o the shims first.

Another thing I noticed is the threaded studs on these Bergstroms are long! Not sure why they make them that long-could be 1/2" shorter.

Studs are longer to allow use of Ski Saver. If your carbide is sitting flat, you should be OK. If your shim is too thick, the condition you describe will occur. Ride it and see how it works. If you don't have the Saver installed I would highly reccomend putting it on. REALLY saves on ski wear as well as helping turning. Adds some depth to your keel. I have them on ALL my sleds and am very pleased with them. I have set of Viper skis on my Venture that have over 10,000 miles on them and the keels are perfect. Hope this helped.

studs & ski savers

I DO have the Ski Savers on and the studs are still quite long.

I would believe the shims should be used. I have the "Ugly Kit" as well, but haven't installed yet. My sled darted bad as received. Ground down a section of old drive belt to about 3/8" thick and wide, placed between skeg and rubber bumber, full width. No darting and no pushing. Won't put on the Bergs until production carbides are worn. Will use the "Savers" and keep my current shims in place to start with.
