Best apex clutch kit?

I use Ulmer's clutch kit, air box mod, PCV and gears changed to 23/38. Not sure the gearing was a great move as traction was already a issue perhaps 24/39 would have been a smarter call. Still hauls the mail nothing has been out in front of this sled past 80mph but haven't run a turbo cat yet so can't say I've beat everything lol.

Ulmer is great to deal with and has run 24/39 gearing he might be able to shine more light on that setup for you!

Wasn't looking to dump a grand into it all yet. Was just going to piece it together over time. But after visiting his site that's who I'll be getting my stuff from, looks great. Thanks .

I know the Ulmer kit has been the go to for the Apex (nothing wrong with it).......but to be honest I feel the kit I have is better and has been tested side by side to an Ulmer kit.

I got it from Pro Line (John Wheelock) and it uses custom made Dalton parts. The difference from stock is quite noticeable.

I've been reading this forum for years and years but finally decided to make an account. I run drag n flys in my 07 attak with 21/38 gearing. i know you guys probably think im nuts to run this kinda gearing but it hauls the mail good. i run a 1" hacksaw with108 picks as well so spinning isnt as significant, it actually hooks up pretty good. I dont think ill run out of gear since last year i pulled 110mph on gps wit a 1.25 ripsaw, no clips on ice in spring and just this past weekend i pulled 108 mph on gps and rocking hard down low. i was racing 2 other apex's and starting 3 lengths back and would catch and pass within 660ft. and continue to pull. Also raced my buddys attak and were neck and neck near the end then he would pass me by a length or two. He has some mods (some are unknown) and I have (airbox, PCV, stock exhaust tho) These are 3/4 mile runs or more. The temp was around -12C and loosened up groomed trail.

I'm not looking for top speed but just more low end for in the hills and powder, long as I can do 120 km/h I'll be happy. I spend a lot of time in the mountains and hills so I'm looking for more torque to help get the front end ip

My mistake I didnt see your type of sled. I see its already geared for 20/40 from stock. As for clutching most kits work well for increasing bottom end as they have a more aggressive profile which allows you to run less weight which makes the sled much more snappier and you can easily adjust where you want the weight to be. Im not sure of the best setup for a mountain sled all I can suggest is try asking the guys in the apex mountain forum.

No man that's fine, I love reading and learning bout new stuff, I've posted in the mountain forum and never get any help, everyone is pretty much dead over there lol but thanks for your help tho

I have never tried the Heelclicker or Drag N Fly stuff. Years ago when I still ran 2 stroke Yamaha's I played with tons of different clutch setups. I had super good luck with Jeff Simon's Heavy Hitters on the 2 stroke Vipers and steered some SRX owners to them with similar results. I was planning on trying the Heelclicker stuff but was fore warned about the inconsistencies that can happen with their setups..... constant adjustments. Talking with several people I have heard (at least with the 2 strokes) that they were hot set ups for drag racing but not as good for trail riding. What I have seen is very tall primary springs and aggressive helix angles that don't allow for good secondary back shifting. The tall primary springs take two men and a bear to get the cover on and I was always hearing about hot to the touch clutches. To me that means inefficiency when I see heat build up. Not trying to knock their stuff but some of these stories and the constant threads on how to tune these kits told me that I was in for plenty of tinkering. Been there and done that in my past and these days I don't have the time for it.

As for the intent of the original poster. If you are doing more off trail, powder type riding I would definitely look into Ulmer's stuff. I know they do plenty of that type of setup too. Not sure if my kit would be decent with that or not. I am mostly a trail rider.

It all depends on setup I run drag n flys in my srx and atworst of times they are barely warm and ive pulled good top end with them and awesome downlow but yes I agree with you they are not good for trail use, usually very high and aggressive engagement plus the spring is a pain, I made a a tool to compress it for me using a socket or wrench.

Call ulmer see what he has to offer or even some mountain shops in BC, we use to order from Mountain Performance when I worked at the Yamaha Dealer here in Winnipeg.
