Did you just adjust the clip and preload and or go with the big boy spring?
I'm good size 260 or more with gear. My 07 Attak is stock settings. Seeing the charts and reading the posts here I should get the Clip to 3 and preload at 2 or 3. If so why the big boy spring? My concern is bottoming out and damageing something.

I'm 230# w/gear and running 6.5 revalved shock, cam set at 5 sag @ 40mm, "C" clip in 1st position, limiter pulled up 1 hole and rebound to softest and rides #1

Capt,

I'm about the same size as you and I wasn't happy with just setting the clip to the 3rd groove and preload high. It didn't bottom as much, but still not wuite right. I had Pioneer revalve the shock and add the Yamaha fatboy spring. This made a world of difference in the ride. Very seldom bottom now unless I really slam it hard. Much better ride in the rough too.

Good news thanks Shootinstick. But I don't want to send it in now during this season..It's a short one here in NH.
2 questions though. Did you use or keep the big boy spring (7.0?) with the same 3 groove and preload high with the revalve?
Also how did you change the clip to 3rd groove and set preload high? Take the shock out? Spring compressor needed?etc.
I"ve been looking at the service manuals as well as searching here but lot's of info gets in the way.. This would make it easy..as you have an 07 Attak.

Capt.

Capt I am in the same boat as you. I have an 07 Attak and currently on the 3rd ring, shock set as stiff as I can (now it doesn't return to full hieght). Stil bottom on the big whoops and need to do somthing else. I am in Canada and the big boy spring 7.0 from Yamaha is over $200.00. Not a big deal but I an't find anyone around here to do the revavle in short order and I don't want to loose ride time.

Is the sled riddable if I just through the 7.0 spring on and revavle in the off season?

you boys need to get your shocks revalved for your weight. No need to upgrade the spring. Call Carver. Tell them you weight and how your ride and they will set you up real nice.

Made my apex a world of difference.

I would have done that, but it was more convenient to buy the spring.

Yep, just had mine done to my GT. It's awesome now... No kickback and know you can now drive it through the rougher terrain instead of having to tippy toe, because it was like being on a pogo stick... :-o :jump:

Guys, the spring carries the weight, the shock slow the motion. If you only stiffen the shock to control bottoming you will not be experiencing the max performance that the suspension will deliver. The setup manual is pretty accurate for a given rider weight and I recommend starting with that, especially where a heavier spring is called for. If you must make a choice between spring change and shock revalve, take the spring first. I go 300+ and put the fatboy spring in my '06 RTX and can get the shock to regulate from very soft for the glassy trails to pretty firm for the rougher stuff. I do not jump this sled so if you do, thses recommendations won't work. With the setup I have, many times I head off into a sucker hole and pucker up waiting to bottom out.... it doesn't happen except in the worst cases when I should be standing. 7500 miles in two seasons and I still smile!! Just my opinion....

Thanks for the replys. I'll wait until next season to have the shock revalved. Maybe the spring too. I'll have them do both at once.

I've got a heavy spring for the R.A. (non-Ohlins) Mono. About 2,000 miles on it, if anyone is interested.

It all depends on how you ride and what conditions you ride in.
Down here the trails are generally rough. Where I live there are about 20 miles on non-club trails that you have to ride that aren't maintained at all, to get to a trail system that is groomed. I could trailer it to the groomed trails but that wouldn't be any fun. We ride that rough part like it's a snow cross. I tried the bigger spring and a couple of re-valves and couldn't get it to work right for what I was doing. I finally spent the big$ and got the Hygear Trail Pro Package. It works perfect for what I do. Looking back on what I spent on springs revalves and shipping not to mention down time, the prices were not that different. I'm 240lbs with my gear on.
Just my 2 cents.
