I have ridden there many times. I haven't seen to many hills though. The trails are mostly sand, not a lot of mud. On weekends it gets very busy. We usually ride from Milston to Hatfield and back. 100+ mile ride.

Good spot for sport quads and enduro bikes but not real challenging for the big iron unless you like riding with the throttle pinned trying to chase down a Raptor only to find him waiting for you at crossings with his feet up on the bars asking what took you so long.
Any mud you do find, unless there was a recent storm, is going to be off trail and they will fine your a$$ if they catch you.
Otherwise, wonderful place to ride. 8)

We try to make a run up there after 12-15 when they open the atv trails up again. A lot of the time there is 3-4" of snow on the trails. Makes it a lot of fun, plus no one is out there. That makes it safer from head ons. Steve I'm sure you know what I mean if you have ridden BRF in the summer.

If you want trails in Wisconsin that are made for muddin', head to the southern part of the state and ride the Cheese County trails in Monroe.
I rode that trails with my father and my brother a number of years ago. When you ride that trail leave the sport quads and 4x2 utilitys at home. Those trails are strictly for the fully-locked 4x4s with winches.

Iowa, that sounds like an awesome event at a great location. The Bunkhouse Retreat was designed with ATV's in mind, he's got mud bogs, big sand piles and whatever he dreams up when he feels like making the earth move with his equipment. (My kind of guy!)
The Bunkhouse also connects to teh Clark County-Black River Falls trail system so you can even take a snort out on to the trail if you get bored with the event.
Unfortunately, i won't be able to swing that one with the Hurley Pumpkin Run happening the weekend before or I'd be game.
Cap'n, tell us more about those Cheese Country trails. Folks told me it was all flat RR grade and not worth the ride for mudders. Heck of a lot easier commute for me than Hurley.

I've been to the Cheese County trails many times as well. The only mud I saw was areas that you should not be riding in. Many are taped off. I've ridden from Monroe to Mineral Point and Belmont. It was all RR grade. There is a trail that runs from the RR grade to Fayette but when I've been there it's been closed due to wet conditions. Maybe that's where the mud is I don't know. It is a good trail to break in a new atv on though. It has a 35mph speed limit and believe it or not the police are out there with radar guns. If you go, go after a rain. Other wise you'll be eating A LOT of dust. 120 mile day if you run the whole thing and a nice easy cruise.

Keep in mind, I rode it about 8 years ago and Ive heard they closed off some of the trail. Apparently some knuckleheads kept riding through some farmer's field and the farmer finally got fed up with it and refused access through his land. This forced them to close some of it.
Theres still a fair amount of muddin' to be found on that trail though. If you want mud, you best bet is to ride that trail as early in the season as possible.
It seems like a lot of ATV trails are being reduced to RR grades and forest roads. Im more of a sport quad guy, so thats great for me but for those of you who like deep mud so you can actually use your 4x4s as 4x4s its kind of depressing.
I usually ride the Little Rice trail in Minocqua, WI about once a year and they took the muddy sections out of that trail. Now its mostly straight and fast riding with a few corners thrown in. Its still fun, but for those who like mud it was better the old way. I can remember riding that trail with my '97 Polaris Scrambler 500 4x4 and when we'd get back there wasnt a single inch of my quad that wasnt covered in mud.
