Take me to school on the Boondocker turbo for an Apex. I want to know everything and I want to know it ASAP. What to look for when buying one? Pros cons? Goods bads? Help me out here guys. Thanks.

I've been running one for 3 years now. Although there are some shortcomings I think it is a great kit for a great price. They made both a 25 series turbo kit and a 28 series, so keep that in mind when purchasing. The 25 starts to lose efficiency at 12 lbs of boost. Here are some things I've found both good and bad.

1) the kit's 2 inch tail pipe into the tunnel creates alot of backed up heat in the turbo and the header, build yourself an open 3 inch pipe and dump it out the side or the bellypan.

2) some of the earlier kits came with a woven flex joint at the end of the header just before it went into the turbo. When combined with that small diameter tailpipe and all that heat, they had some issues with blowing it out. The updated header from BD has a Burns Stainless slip fitting instead of this flex joint and I believe an updated header from BD costs 1200 bucks. Just find Burns Stainless on the net and order yourself the slip fitting and have a good welder fab it in place of the flex joint.

3) when placing the oil dipstick on top of the BD threads (not threaded in) make sure your oil level is no more than 1/2 full or you'll push it out the overflow tube anyway.

4) if the BD Box is not an ADA (not sure if they even have it for the apex?) scrap it and get a pure logic or any dobeck style controller for it. They work much better and you won't have to change your numbers when you drive from one side of the mountain to another. :o|

5) the intercoolers aren't the best on the planet and can heat soak fairly easily. The bigger exhaust will actually help this too, but a small electric fan or water/meth is in my future to cool the charge down a little better. This is pretty nit picky, if you don't ride like the engergizer bunny like I do and constantly runnin the crap out of it, you won't see this problem.

Other than those little things I would change, like I said, they are a great kit for a great price. I love mine!

What do you mean by ADA? When you said if the BD Box is not ADA...

And this one is the 25 series. It's already on a sled I'm thinking about buying. I'm aware of them spitting oil out. I've read it had to do with the baffles that BD didn't use in the oil tanks. Sound like this was one of very few problems but a fairly common one at high boost levels.

Also what kind of boost am I safe to run with this setup on pump 91 on 1500ft? It's got a head shim in it.

Hobbes - welcome to the site. Thanks for your info on the kit.

Also a few more ?'s. What kind of boost can I run with a Boondocker at 1200ft on pump gas? What about at 6000ft and pump gas? And what about 8000ft on pump gas?
Thanks.

TTT...I have had guys say that the Boondocker box without the ADA upgrade works just fine.

How can this be based on what was said above?

I did ask the same question 6 month ago --- looks like boondocker sort of gave up on the Yamaha's and is full tilt into 2-strokes.

They have not continued to refine there kits like the other manufacturers have. That is why I stayed away from them .

I did get some heads up PM's because some people did not want to speak on the open forum about there experiences .

Sorry to hear about his problems :-(

I just installed the Nytro turbo kit from Boondocker this past week. Boondockers technical support was excellent A++, i.e Kyle. Kyle was there to assist any time I need help. So Kyle if you are reading this, thanks, very much appreciated.. As for Code Red Performance in Belgrade MT, whom I bought the kit from, Justin (owner) never once returned any of my calls, which were over a dozen, so Justin, you can piss off. You got your money, then you bail, great way to do biz!!! Wont go forgotten..

Now for the Kit details. The fit was clean, they did a great job thinking this one through. Ran a few tests on the ice and dialed her in as we have no snow :o| ..

Good to know :-)
Hope you get some time on the ice at least, have fun.
