hey group i saw on the ulmer racing web site that the bottom gear of a reverse model can fit on a non reverse model. the reason why i asking that is that i want to installed a 39t bottom gear on my non reverse apex and the one availlable from yamaha is for reverse model. anyone has tried it before??

The non-reverse bottom gears are different than that of the reverse models. A non-reverse 39 tooth gear would be $50 + shipping.

Sure it will FIT (with a few extra parts), but it won't lock to the shaft without the rest of the reverse kit.
The driveshaft is splined. A forward gear fits directly on those splines and its end of story. In a reverse chaincase, there is a part "Journal 1 -- 8CW-47571-00-00" that goes on the splined shaft. This part is a bearing race on one end and a splined hub on the other end. The reverse gear has a bearing at the center that runs on the journal race. The "Reverse Wheel" has internal splines and slides on that journal. In order for the chaincase to be in FORWARD, the reverse wheel has to be slid into the bottom gear (that runs on a bearing) so that the two are locked together (and therefore both are locked to the shaft). To be in REVERSE, the reverse wheel has to slide AWAY from the gear and into the reverse pinion gear where the drive sprocket at which point the driven sprocket will SPIN FREELY.
What this means is this; you CANNOT use a reverse gear by itself on a non-reverse sled!
What you read was this;
This does NOT say that the 38 through 42 gears for forward-only and with reverse are the same... they are NOT (hence the price difference). It says that you CAN GET 38 through 42 with reverse.

Bottom gears 38, 39, 40, and 42 available for reverse.
Bottom gears 38 to 43 will work on non-reverse models when used with correct chain length.

This is an aftermarket gear. The OEM Yamaha gear is $120+ retail US pricing.
