I had the preload on my spring set to the hardest position and my Attak was still bottoming frequently. I asked the dealer whether I should install a heavier spring and was told that it was not necessary. The dealer then adjusted the position of the spring in the mounting coupler and it took care of the bottoming. In fact, my sled now rides a bit firm.

At the risk of sounding completely uninformed regarding the mono shock suspension (which I am), I will try to explain the adjustment the dealer made to my suspension. The spring is mounted on a coupler, which has three positions, and in the STOCK position the spring is mounted on the softed position within the coupler (this is different than spring-preload). The dealer moved the location of the spring within the coupler to the hardest position and then backed off the preload on my spring.

I was told that given the ability to adjust the spring position within the coupler, only individuals over 300 pounds should need a heavier spring. It could be that most people on this site are aready aware of this adjustment, but for those who are not and are thinking of buying a heavier spring, you should consider this adjustment.

Yes you can adjust the "Clips" to shorten the spring and increase preload. On an RTX there are like 9 cam adjustments, each "clip" movement brings the cam adustment back to "zero", and gives you like nine tighter settings

BUT a shorter spring means less travel, and you have to measure (see pinned measurement procedure 40 to 45 mm of sit in) and not have your spring go under 10.3 inches or you can coil bind the spring if you crank it too short.

I am 245 or so, and just put in the fat boy spring. have the clip on the soft setting, and the cam on the 5-6 setting to have the proper "sit it"

hope this helps, rather than confuses.

Just remember that everytime you move the clip to number 2 or 3 you are still loading the spring, and there is 7 pos. on the cam adjuster,if i was anywhere near 300# i would just get the big boy spring,i have it on my attak and i now run the clip in number 1 and cam on 4 with me and suited up,iam 240# but i drive very agressive, you can also get the spring in different rates, but by all means, give the clip a try first,i went to the 3rd clip right off the bat,and it was to much,we went back to 2nd and to little,so i got the bigger spring and 1 is fine, your choice..

this is why yamaha are going to have suspension clinics at the dealers shop. yes you should have the heavier spring and most people are not aware that there is more than one heavy spring. going to the third clip makes the sled ride harsher.
