About to get my first 4-stroke and I am wonder what the break in period is if there is any?

I broke my first on in with about 100 1/4 and 1/2 mile runs with many cool down cycles..and she was fast...oil changed at 250 miles way before recommend though..

I did mine by the manual and she runs like a champ!

I went with the manual. I've had 3 different yamaha 4 strokes and broke them all in this way.

Seat the rings properly. That's the key to any motor break in. Keep the motor under load, especially the first 25 miles or so. Lots of RPM variation. Don't run it for long periods at the same RPM, regardless of what the RPM is.

Dont start the sled over and again in the garage just to hear it...there is a finite time period for proper ring seating and proper heat and cool cycles.. read the motoman post..
let it warm up well first...then hammer it..period...

It dont take long to get them warmed up so I would do 2 good heat soaks first. Run to operating temp then cool. Then balls out, hard on to push the rings then let the engine idle for a couple seconds to push out what you are breaking in (cylinder and piston fragments microscopic). MAKE SURE IT IS WARM BEFORE YOU GET INTO IT EVEN AFTER BREAK IN!! Do this for at least the first tank of fuel then ride her like a rental.

whatever you do dont make it your garage queen and start and run over and over again before you put load on her...you only have a finite amount of time to seat your rings....and it takes load to do so...
thats one reason why some are pouchs and other are animals!
dynos see as much as a 5-6 h.p. variance machine to machine and this is a contributing factor...IMHO

0-50 miles in and out of throttle up to around 8500 rpm
(this period sucked i just wanted more)
50-300 miles in and out of the throttle to max rpm
300+ Tape it to the bars
I'm not saying this is the best way but my Nytro keeps up with my buddies riding apex's. Probably has a little to do with traction of the 144 vs 121

I just used Motoman's method of break-in. I put 26 miles on it and Motoman states in his post the break-in is done in 20. He says change the oil. How many of you that used this method changed to oil at 20 miles or did you go farther? Please let me know. Thanks!

I read the manual and did a 20 mile ride. came home watched the youtube vids with the different pistons. Went with the HOT break in after that. changed oil at 150 miles.

- 09 nytro xtx, 8 inch slydog powederhounds, mbrp silencer, ulmer racing clutching, fast track studs,cr10ek sparkplugs,
ran it 500 miles. thats why you have a oil filter.also broke it in rippin it and letting it cool down every now and then.seems fast to me.its a 09 xtx havent got to race many people other than a f7 that was studded.it kicked my #*$&@ every time.this years gunna be differnt with some studs.thanks to sj with the help at the novi show.
