Purchased my first four stroke, and I am looking at how to break it in.. how did you break in your sled? and how has that worked for you thus far?

like it says in the book . use full power in spurts and bring the rpm back down . short bursts of power and then back down to recomended rpm . don't hold the throttle at any 1 rpm for a sustaned piriod . 12000 miles and no problems .

Loosen up your track most dealers send them out way to tight,if this is your first Yamaha you will learn to run your track loose.

Ditto, I also like to get it hot (NOT OVERHEATING) and completely cool for a few cycles. I have had very good success this way.

Not if he doesn't want to have bigtime ratcheting issues! Yamaha runs their tracks TIGHT for a reason. They come from the dealer that way because that's what Yamaha gives them for specs.
Maybe the more powerful 4-strokes are different, but I ran my SX 700 for 13,000 miles with a track WAY looser than the manual says with ZERO problems. In my opinion, they spec the track so tight to cover their butt against ratcheting and maybe derailures, and allow for longer intervals between setting the tightness.
As far as the engine, I'm with all these guys in the "full blast in short intervals" to seat the rings.

Yup, they sure are. The low end torque and sucky suspension geometry makes them ratchet real bad if you loosen up the track, especially on the proaction, and even more especially if you run a lot of weight transfer. The 2-strokes don't have that low end grunt that shocks the hell out of the track like these heavy 4-strokes do. By all means loosen it up, but I can guarantee you wont like it the first time you punch it on hard packed snow or you dig down into a patch of grass this fall.

Track ratchet depends on suspension setup, I run the track on my 136 and even our turbo sled quite a bit looser than what Yamaha specs with no ratcheting, both are pro-actions. Just gotta get em setup right.

I thought this thread was about engine break in. I run mine out of the box the way I am going to ride it. No problems thus far and changed to full synthetic after 500 miles on two sleds now again no problems.
Ran it like I would drive it normally, pulled some long hauls, but not at one sustained RPM.
Changed oil and filter about 200 miles.
As far a track tension, leave it as the delaer set it up, as a new track will break in and stretch! This is why delaers recomend driving for a while (few hundred miles) prior to studding a track.

I broke both of mine in pretty hard. My warrior was up to 126mph in the first 25 miles and was hitting 10,600 with stock clutching by the time it had 200 miles on it. It could hold it own against many rx-1's.
My Apex was broke in just as hard and was even towing a blown up ski-doo back to the truck when it only had 6 miles on it.
Both sleds run awesome and dont use a drop of oil. Eric

i've always heard to break them in like you're going to ride them. never broken in a new sled but i have broken in a new waverunner. i just broke it in like i was going to ride it. must have done it right b/c shes a ROCKET!

We broke in 3 apex/attak sleds last year,all under load in 3-4 inches of snow,and all three of them wfo for short bursts of say 1014 seconds,just like you were drag racing 1/4 mile,hold it to the pin like that under load for the first 25 miles that all the time you will have to seat the rings,you need pressure to do this the right way. Now we all have sleds that ran 115-120 gps last year and not one used a drop of oil,do what you want but we had much better luck this way than i did in 03 with my rx1 that i broke in on a jack stand with a hose running water to cool it down,i used to back a trailer into a lake to load the motor and always had good luck with that,but in 03 i did not do this,and i also ran it for ixtended periods of time at one speed 30-40 mph never again,i like motos thinking it works if done right!Nattydread said:Purchased my first four stroke, and I am looking at how to break it in.. how did you break in your sled? and how has that worked for you thus far?
