Broken Header

I got a brand new stock header from a 2011 XTX in my garage--literally 0 miles. Bought new sled and had them put the excel header on before it left the shop.

New Excell header ordered, and best part is the wife will not see it.

Thanks for the input..

Srxspec is right, the stock header is some form of steel, put a magnet on it and it will stick, so its not titanium, and if its stainless, its a really cheap stainless because 304 stainless isn't magnetic either.

That said, I was part of a post on the Nytro Mtn side discussing welding of the header, and Tig using a 309 filler rod should do the trick. One consideration if you plan to weld: you need to get sheilding gas inside the header to protect the inside of the weld from oxygen. With paper thin tubing, not doing so will embrittle the inside surface of the weld, and I will bet you it will fail right beside the weld every single time.

I did talk to my dealer, and he has had 3 header failures and all with aftermarket pipes. My buddy blew the bottom of the merge collector off (weird, as the header was still in one piece), while we were testing an under tunnel setup. Won't blame Yami on that one.

NTN, you running stock exhaust? It looks that way from the pick, but not sure.

This is what a poor stainless weld looks like. Btw this is a factory weld from a aftermarket header mfg.

sorry to see that....they don't look like very good welds. If you check out the link below, it shows a bunch of guys who welded the nytro header in a new orientation to go under tunnel.

I find tig is always more sensitive to mistakes, and I am sure both yami and the aftermarket headers will have some failures.....the law of averges will always get you in the end.

So are these headers all 08,09 that we are cracking. As the 10 and up header is stronger.
Just wonder if i will attempt to repair or just replace with updated part and keep the old one as a back up.

Stock now with an Excell ordered, it better hold up for a few years..

Mine cracked at the bracket under the gas tank. Yamaha covered the parts, but not without a fight, and I had to pay the labour ! #$%&* According to my dealer, the stock 08 headers were made of a lighter grade material with thin walled tubing, but the newer ones are made of a different material and are much stronger because many were breaking.

My header just broke yesterday (exactly like in the first picture). 2008 RTX with 5100 miles on it. Hopefully the 5 yr YES will cover it.

The header design used from 2010 and on is stronger up front because the three primary pipes are bridged together. This stops the two outer primary pipes from bending inwards, causing extra stress on the flex tubes. However, this does not affect the collector where they all crack sooner or later. I have been on couple of different FX Nytros since 2008 and I have not had a single header last more than two seasons, no matter if it was OEM or aftermarket. I am keeping my 2011 MTX SE 162" one more season and I replaced the header because the stock one literally fell apart during the last ride of last season.

Mine broke at the exact same spot as the first pic and I tig welded it with 309 filler without back purging. My repair currently has 2000 miles on it without a problem. I'm still saving my pennies for a hindle though
