ok so this morning i took it for a quick spin. just to let those that dont know i had the chain case off during the summer while i installed the zx2 suspension and also added the 22T.

so heres my question, after the quick spin, less than half mile or 3/4 of a mile i wanted to inspect the sled to make sure everything is all good. i noticed some gear lube on the outside running down the case. i found where its coming from and its from the top shaft. now my question is what would cause this, i checked the level and its around the std and i have reverse, is it possible to over fill this to cause this? iam using gear lube and not chain case lube and installed everything back the way i took it off. all orings are on the sled has around 600 miles on it and this is the first time using it since the install.

any feedback would be great.

no expert here but maybe i can help. the leak is from the jackshaft through the cover. the cover has a seal and the collar with the small torx screw in it slides over the shaft and into the seal. i believe it also has an o ring in it to seal the shaft. check your sled for proper parts order as that collar keeps the oil in. if the seal leaks its not expensive to replace and is press fit in. i dont believe overfilling would make it leak there, as the dipstick is vented.

Just a thought but, usually whenever doing something like that, where a shaft comes through a cover, your better off putting in a new seal. Even if its fairly new.

Its just cheap insurance.

yeah i have all parts in correctly. the collar is up against the seal as close as it will get. oring is on and in place.

i just went and bought a new oil seal to be on the safe side. cost $16 which is better than buying a new chain case later.

i will replace it in the next couple days, just hope we get more snow so i can make sure it doesn't leak.

Question, did you change your chain with that 22/38 gearing?

Apex gt came with 24/38 and a 70 link chain,22/38 need a 68 link chain.

As for the seal i have open my chain case at least 8 time and never ad seal problem, but that does not mean your seal is good.

Overfilling could Be a problem, the oil could be foaming when too much so put the sled flat on the ground and fill to the arrow.

Its got to be a bad seal or a PINCHED/out of place cover GASKET, also make sure you torqued all bolts/nuts to spec...over filling will not cause it to leak.

did some more looking around at it, i found i put the collar on before the locking collar(the one that seats the oring and oil ring) so i took the brake assembly off and rotated them, now i am worried that i ran it like that the oil seal might have gotten banged up and will still leak. i did drive it around a little bit after-wards and didn't get the same effect as before, i had wiped it once and had very little oil almost as if it was residue from before, however i did clean it up the best i can.

what are you thoughts?

thought that was the problem, as i made the same mistake before. clean it good with brake clean and drive it, checking to see if it still leaks. even if it does it will be a very small amount at a time, nothing catastrophic that will end a ride.

yeah i just don't want anything bad to happen, i did buy a new seal and i guess i could just replace it anyways. i did ride it around a bit after i fixed my mistake and it didn't leak, tho i did find some and i mean very little oil on the seal itself which could have just been left over from before, i do think i cleaned it well but its hard to say.

i think if we get snow this weekend i will run around a bit to see if it leaks. if it does i will replace it before my trip on the 20th of jan.
after i fixed my mistake it really wasn't leaking at all. like i said what i found might have been left over oil from when it was leaking bad. so i will definitely try it again before i go digging into the case, if it doesn't leak i will leave it. just hope for more snow before we go.

just a little update. rode about 30 miles around the fields getting on and off the throttle. about 2 hours of straight riding. came home and checked the seal and its all good. nothing leaked out and looks clean as a whistle.
thanks to all that helped me out, i will keep an eye on it during the trip tho and i will bring the seal with just in case.
cant ever be too caution.

put some brake grease in the seal if you can, when i assemble the chain case i always use some brake grease on the seals this helps the seal break in.. or allows reused seals to seat...
