I was out riding today and I ran over some kind of towel or rag that ended up winding around my left rear axle boot and it removed the outer clamp thus freeing the boot on the outside (where it coonets to the hub). the boot is fine, there was no damage so i was thinking that maybe I could buy a clamp from the local auto parts store and just clamp it but I do not want to do that if is damaging anything. can any help with this? I want to know first if;

I have to replace that axle? Not sure if its under my ext warenty or not.
if i just clamp it would that be ok?
if I can clamp it do I have to clean out and re-pack greese?
If anyone out ther has any experience with this type of stuff can you please give some help.

thanks!

thanks!

OK, I'll get a clamp and pack some grease in the boot and hope for the best.
thanks Mr sled!

While you are at the auto parts staore, get "CV" grease. The clamps can be tricky, but you should be able to get it. Otherwise just use a Nylon Zip tie till you can get it to someoen that has a CV Boot Clamp tool.

It doesn't sound like you have any damage other than perhaps a little junk inside the CV joint that may need to be cleaned out. Dirt inside there shoud not be left in.

;)!

does it have to be a cv clamp? I was going to get one of those clamps that has that little screw on the other end and as you turn it get tighter. if i have to use the cv clamp and a tool where do you find either?

I looked inside and it looked clean, I was only out for about 45 min when it happed and I do not think there is any damage or dirt. I will add some grease...do you know how much i should add?

Thanks!

You might get away with just using a "hose clamp", but I would not trust that for long. If it were to get snagged on something, you could have a lot more trouble than you bargained for.

If you do use a hose clamp, be carefull not to OVER-tighten it. You could get it so tight that it could cut the boot.

I bet if you took it to a auto parts place, they could put a CV clamp on it for very little. It only takes about 30 seconds with the proper tool.

I like to have about 60% of the CV cavity filled with grease and the remainder should be air to allow for expansion and compression of the joint.

Make sure the flange where the boot clamp goes is clean and free of grease. If it is slippery, the boot can slip off again.

Good luck...

thanks grizzhopper!
I am going to call the local atuo parts and see if they can help. thanks again!
