Can you run different rear idler wheels as long as they are the same size? Is anybody doing this? I'm having a real hard time to find a Silver Idler wheel for my 2003 rx1 The dealer that had one wanted 90.00 for the one wheel seems weird considering they are in the yamaha parts catalog for 31.00 and in the micro fiche for 28.00.

There are about a zillion threads on idler wheels on this site. Yes, you can use different wheels. As for which ones and part numbers, try using the search feature on this site. I'm certain you will find the answer to your question.

Dealer was trying to sell you the same wheel that the sled was made with, can't change the bearing. Get the one in the catalog that's cheaper and bearing is replaceable.

Idler Wheel
Yeah they said that the one in the catalog might not work that I should buy the one they have. I asked them what made them think it wouldn't fit seeing how the catalog said it was for that year sled and the had no real answer. I guess I will be looking for another dealer for the new sled when I get ready.

I have ran rear idler wheels off of my 96 vmax wich are also the same as my 91 exciter they fit right on and are the same size as the 03 rx1 .The reason I know this is because I lost an outer one and I cobbed one off my other sled and ran that way for the rest of the winter.

RTX sled below on left has Cat wheels on the back.
BA APEX's RTX.
Probably not the wheels to use but it works.
He rode it this way when he was at 285+ lbs.Didn't kill the oversized wheels.

I have an 03 RX-1 with silver wheels. I just took the skid off and replaced the bearings in the wheels. Yamaha wants you to buy the entire wheel and bearing. The aftermarket bearing manufacture is called "All Balls". I just pressed the bearings out of the wheels and brought them with me to the dealer. They matched them up with the appropriate All Balls size. Cost $6 and change a piece! At that price I replace every wheel bearing on the skid Obviously if your wheel is bad or the rubber is chewed off, then you would need to get the wheel and bearing. My dealer price was the same price listed by Yamaha. I would change dealers if they are going to charge you $90 bucks a wheel. The appropriate name for you dealer is STEALER! Also check the Parts Unlimited catalog for replacement Silver wheels. They had the silver ones in there you need too.
