I came across a used nytro in the classifieds but I'm totally new to the nytro world. I think this machine may be a good deal as the sled only has 5200km (3200mi) and the seller asks 6500CA$. I want to go take a look at it this weekend but before I spend the gas and time to take the drive I have some questions:

- Is a CE 174X2.5 track too much for a stock nytro?
- The sled is a 2008 : anything to know about this year or nytros in general? (problems specific to this year)
- The tunnel has been modified to accomodate the 174 track (ASMI rail extensions) and yoshimura exhaust. Should I stay away from that?

I have had a 08 Phazer MTX for the past two seasons and think it's time to get something a little more powerful but I'm really not sure about the 174 track and extensive tunnel mods. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Several things with the 08-09 nytro needs to be addressed.

The rear suspension, Front suspension geometry being the biggest.

What kind of riding will you be doing coming from a phazer the 174 not needed but you could sell it go back to the 153 or 162.

Weak subframe if it hasnt already been updated to a 09 or later. you can tell by the thin gusset plates between the two bottom main tubes under where the lower a-arms bolt up. You can also check if its bent by looking at the shocks if they are centered between the top a-arm you are fine if not its bent.
If the sled it geared right and clutched right it should work Ok but I do think that a 174 is a little big for a N/A nytro. He may have already geared it down with a 18t top gear that would help. As mentioned before the approach angle of stock rear skid and the front end geometry are the two big things. easy to fix with money but if you dont have any extra it can pose a problem with the nytro's
I have a 163 on my 08 and it really works well. If you are big guy +225 lbs the rear springs are soft even with them set to stiff. Apex mountain spring is the easy fix and revalved shocks. Hyfax seem to wear out quickly on sled too if you ride a lot with low snow or hard packed trails. they can over heat if you dont have ice scratchers in low slow as well. Its not a huge issue but it will happen if you dont watch it. Sled has potential if you can throw some extra money at them. Running an aftermarket exhaust without a fuel control box sometimes causes a lean condition but it will produce a little more then stock horsepower so that is a good thing.

Went to see it in person yesterday and I'd say that overall the sled looks pretty good. The seller even dropped the price to 6000. There are some minor things to fix like worn bushings in the front a-arms and a minor bend in the front bumper. Everything else in the front suspension looks good. I don't know the exact gearing but the seller told me it has been geared down. Now the track... WOW!!! 174X16X2.5 challenger extreme is one hell of a track!! The track looks brand new and the rail extension looks solid but my concern is : is it too long? The extension looks solid but I'm affraid the stock rail could bend at a weaker point. Going back to 153 or 162 is an option and selling or trading the 174 shouldn't be a problem but if I go back to a shorter track I'm stuck with the extra long tunnel or I'll have to cut it down and weld a new rear bumper. The tunnel extension itself is well made : the side plates are laser cut 1/4 aluminium sheets (1/4 may be a little overkill but...) riveted to the stock tunnel so everything looks good and is solid. Another awesome feature is the running boards : custom made with tubing and laser cut aluminium plates. They look like the high dollar air frame running boards.

About my riding style, I'm 6'1 210 lbs and do mostly backcountry riding. The riding conditions here in Quebec vary a lot : we sometimes ride in 6 inches of snow but back in december we had 3 foot so... I know 174 is a bit long but at that price I think this sled could be a good bet.

The main thing keeping be back from te nytro is having to sell the phazer and not knowing when I'll be able to sell it. Plus I'm affraid I'll miss the phazer's maneuverability and weight... I can go everywhere and am very confident on the little phazer but sometimes it just lacks the power I'd have from a nytro.

Don't know...

Personally I would stay away from it. There are a lot of unmolested Nytro's out there for about that $. The rail ext don't look very professional to me. Along with the axle set-up. To spend that kind of money with the idea of changing it back to a 153 or 162" doesn't make sense.

The rail extension is made by ASMI here in Quebec. They are known for being well made and sturdy. I honestly don't know much for the axle setup. I was also skeptical at the beginning but the guy has been running this setup for the last two seasons without any problem so I wouldn't be too concerned.
As for the availability of good priced Nytros, what you say may be the case where you are but not here. I've been looking Nytros for a while in the classifieds and the only other one I've seen around that price in the last year sold in one day. There are not many Nytro MTXs for sale around here and most of them are either way up north or they are much more expensive in the 8000-10000$ range (a new nytro mtx retails for +/- 14000$ around here). With the gas at 1.38$/litre (5.25$/gallon) I don't feel like spending the time and money to travel 1000km just to see a sled and not even be sure if I buy it.

I'm aware this may not be the best possible setup but for that price, I think it has some potential. I mean, I may or may not like the 174" track but I may end up just leaving it like that. In the other case, going back to a shorter track wouldn't be that much hassle.

Still undecided but I really appreciate the comments, it helps me weight the pros and cons...

Man that thing would be wild with a turbo and a mountain in front of you. If the price is right and the thing is tight then do it. Just be careful you are not buying his problems. You could sell that track in a heartbeat and go back to stock leanth if you dont like it.

I understand that things in Canada are more $ but maybe a drive is worth it. Here are just some.

I know MN is a long ways from you but if there are that many available here....just a thought. I didn't even link to the newer ones and turbo's.
Just my $0.02's

Wow!! I really wish we had so many nice sleds like these available around here... and at these prices!!

I considered looking below the border but bringing back a sled here would be a real PITA...
I would have take a drive to see and buy the sled then advise US customs 72 hours in advance for clearance, then go back to bring the sled here... Then Canadian customs... 200$ fees for importation + inspection + registration + 15% taxes + 2X the drive in gas... It's possible but at the end it may not be worth it. I saw a very nice supercharged MTX on craigslist in Maine at 7000$ that's very tempting. Gorham is only 340 km (210 mi) away and 7000 is a very fair price but bringing the sled back here kills the deal : after all taxes and expenses it would end up costing 8500-9000$.
Supercharged Nytro MTX in Maine

I really am in the wrong country :o|

My buddy looked at that supercharged MTX and he found nothing wrong. I think that sled is a STEAL! Especially being that woodys installed the supercharger. That thing has a challenger trak with 70 miles on it and warranty until 2015 also.

My buddy is 350lbs and have no idea why he was looking at a mountain sled. Wasted the guys time.

If you buy the sled, I am sure I could help you out and meet you in jackman for a steak and beer. :)
