I see countless posts about sled weight. All anyone is concerned with is total weight. How come no one talks about making the sled have a lower Center of gravity? It would be interesting to tip a sled on its side on one ski and measure the angle at wich it "balances" at. It seems like a lower Center of gravity would make much better side hilling and maneuvering. Thoughts?

I think a lower CG is great for trails and flat cornering, but doesn't matter quite as much for off trail riding, it helps though.

For off trail riding I think a sled that has the weight balanced equally (front to back and left to right) is equally important. Obviously you don't want the CG too high so you can still control it.

I thought the Apex Mountain had better balance from front to rear than the Nytro does, but it weighed 700lbs......

I think the COG is just as important. Think of going down a steep hill in deeper snow. You then come to a stop and turn 90 to your left. Clutch side of sled is pointing uphill. With a higher cog the sled is going to be much harder to tip up the hill and carve back up the hill. Even if it was heavier it would be a lot easier to tip uphill and carve out of the turn if it had a lower COG

I agree with you on the C/G, thinking of the fuel tank...

Too expensive to fix / resolve on the nytro so I sold it. CG on the Ntryo - vertical and front / rear balance is too far out of whack to start with. Engine was great but just got tired of fighting with the chassis. Some cool threads re the nytro motor in tube chassis and in pro chassis. Great idea if only it was OE and not custom work!

CG matters big time after a day of riding as the higher it is the more weight you are constantly throwing around. I'm no spring chicken, so I am now buying sleds that have light steering and low CG. You simply last longer at the controls.

Yami made a BIG mistake on the Nytro by putting the header beneath the tunnel which effectively thickened the tunnel raising the tank a solid 4" higher than necessary. It ruined their CG IMO.

A cab forward exhaust (renegade) or one that was routed through a hump in the center of the tunnel top (Sorta like the Viper) would have a better choices. They both allow for a much longer and lower fuel tank.

If Yami wanted to preserve their rear pointing exhaust, since the header is only around 5" wide and the tunnel is 17, the tank could have straddled the header with some gap for heat protection/dissipation like motorcycles have This would have been a huge improvement over stock.

A bigger mistake was the steering effort designed into these sleds. Its partially about weight, but a lot more about geometry and excessive linkages which after a day of riding, you can really feel. A simpler system was possible with a more forward steering post like the OFT Relocator. Nikolai put this setup on his custom build and it cleared the engine no problem. Would have saved a lot of weight and complexity too!

I still love my Nytro and will be keeping it for a while longer. Even with its issues, it's still fun to ride and with my mods, turns on a dime and handles really well. Takes more effort but that's just something you have to live with.
And it has that engine that makes you :jump:

OTM
